Statistics Exercise Module 4
JMP Data Tables
This exercise focuses on setting up tables of data, which is the first step to performing statistical
analysis. Module 5 contains an assignment analyzing data with JMP, and this exercise will be used to set up the tables needed to complete that assignment. This exercise covers the following module 4 objectives:
-
Set up data collection tables in JMP
-
Discuss other issues of experiment design including selecting sample sizes and defining data types in JMP
Prerequisite: Install JMP on your computer. JMP is available through TigerWare. Login to your myLSU account and click on Tigerware in the top left menu. From there, search for JMP. This is
free to LSU students.
Resources for using JMP and setting up tables: Use this resources from JMP to view videos and one-page guides on the following topics needed for this exercise

Directions: For each problem, set up the data table in JMP as described. Save each data table to use in the Module 5 Statistics Exercise assignment.
Problem 1: Use of a medication organization tool on ambulances
The goal of this project was to reduce the time paramedics spent reordering supplies for ambulances at the start of shifts for the East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services. One idea was to provide better organization in the medication drawer such that paramedics could easily visualize which medications needed to be ordered. The team times to complete the ordering process with and without the organization tool, and the data is provided below. By completing analysis, you will be able to answer the question: Does the organization tool save ordering time?

1.
Set up a data table using two columns:
Column 1 label: Before/After
Column 2 label: Times (sec)
Column 1 entries will simply be words: “Before” or “After.” You should have 9 rows with “Before” and 7 rows with “After”.
Column 2 entries will be the corresponding times, which you can copy and paste from the table here.
2.
Set the data type for each variable. JMP may do this automatically, but it’s always wise to check. Column 1 is a nominal variable since it is simply a category. Column 2 is continuous since it contains numerical values that indicate order and quantity.

Problem 2: Hospital Transporters Staffing
Hospitals make use of transporters to deliver patients between departments. A previous project evaluated the staffing levels of transporters at Our Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge. Researchers observed times to transport patients from the emergency department triage to treatment center or ED room and to return. The goal of the project was to provide an accurate estimate of transport times, which can then be used in conjunction with patient volumes to determine transporter staffing needs. Use JMP to complete the items below.
Receive Request
Call patient in the lobby/
triage room
Begin patient transport to
Treatment Center
Arrive to TC and hand patient chart and ID stickers to secretary
Place papers in correct bin/
Give to nurse
Treatment Center or ED room
Return to triage
Begin patient transport
To ED room
Arrive to ED room and give the ID stickers to nurse

Problem 3: Evaluating physician performance in a primary care clinic
The goal of this project was to reduce total patient flow time in a primary care clinic within the Baton Rouge General Physicians Group. Casual observations noted a great disparity in times between doctors at the same clinic. The table below presents observed times detailed by patient, physician, and by process step. There are two goals of this initial set of observations: 1) determine which physicians have longer patient flow times, and 2) determine which steps of the process are causing the differences in those flow times.
