LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 1 of 13 VERSION HISTORY Version # Implemented By Revision Date Approved By Approval Date Reason 1.0 GC 05/24/13 HF 05/25/13 Initial version Instructors Note: Remember this is a plan to assess a technology before we can recommend to management that we should invest. The objective of an assessment is to gather the information, evaluate it, and with some degree of certainty be confident that an investment would be prudent. As such, be careful not to frame your plan in a context where the organization will invest and implement the technology and the plan involves assessing how well it will work. It may not. Consider the later scenario where the organization has made a large commitment only to find that it doesn't work as planned. What would be the implications? Would you still have a job afterward?

LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 3 of 13 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Some key point s for the executive summary - Make sure the EC highlights all the key messages you want the chief technology officer, manager, or anyone who reads the document to understand. - The exec utive sum mary should be able to stand on its own. People should be able to read this section and clearly understand how you will proceed with the technology assessment . It is a brief summar y of everything in the report . Key points are presented here for example; how it fits with the strategic goals of the company and benefits it may achieve (improvement in production efficiencies of XX%); projected costs( it will have an estimated cost $XXXX); assessment will take XX weeks to complete; etc . By reading the summary the CTO will immediately know the key points of the assessment plan without actually reading the entire document. Details are contained in the document body itself. - Some e lements I would expect to see are: o What the technology is and how it was approved (through the memo perhaps ) o Key aspects of the assessment plan o Summary of the expected completion time o Summary of HR needs o Statement of total Cost o Overview of risks (if any)
LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 4 of 13 2 SCOPE This part clearly highlight s w hat is in and out of scope for the TA. For example, you will be assessing a technology to see how well it can improve some part of the organizations functions but not some other aspect or feature of the technology that is not useful or required (although you can state that these are available for future reference). Scope tells the reader what you are doing. Make sure the scope gives a clear picture of what you will investigate and the deliverables. Be sure that you state the primary and secondary sources of information to be used in the assessment. For example, you may be contacting suppliers or OEM's, experts, attending conferences, demo's related to the technology etc; or you will be relying on manuals, specifications, web search, etc.
LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 5 of 13 3 TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION AND ALTERNATIVES This section give a very clear description of the technology and not the solution. Make sure you understand the differences between a technology and a solution/product . Remember alternatives are alter n ative technologies, make sure you understand this from the course notes. Table 1 is the alte rnative to the project. Technology A lternatives Implementation Alternatives Local Gauge Measurement No Change Electronic Sensor with Wired Indicator Wireless Sensor/Computer or Phone AP Indication Table 1: Technology A lternatives List Requirements List Requirements

LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 6 of 13 4 ANCILLARIES Make sure these are items that are required to support the technology. Read the course notes to make sure you clearly understand this section. For example , you may need additional electrical service installed if you plan to test an electronic instrument in a location without power. 5 HUMAN RESOURCES List of the skills need to conduct the assessment . You d o not need to identify specific individual s , more their skills and trade. Table 2 provides details on human resource and skills requirements. ROLE SKILLS Assessor Project management, Technology assessment, Report writing Engineer #1 Electrical and electronic analysis skills. Electronic design and cost analysis skills. Engineer #2 …. Table 2: Team construct with skills requirements.
LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 7 of 13 6 SCHEDULE AND TASKS This is the section on schedule. Do not use exact dates like 1 Dec 13. Remember the plan could start and any time. There used start time + x weeks. Example is below. Use an appendix if you have a very long and detailed schedule, you may wish to have a summary schedule here. Ensure you have the total time here and make sure it’s in the executive summary. See Appendix C for a detailed task list and schedule. 6.1 MILESTONES Milestones Estimated Completion Timeframe Phase #1 – Preparation completed Two weeks after project start Phase #2 – Analysis B completed Seven weeks after project start Phase #3 –Analysis A completed Nine weeks after project start Phase #4 – Cost Analysis completed Nine weeks after project start Phase #5 – Safety/Environmental Analysis completed Eleven weeks after project start Phase #6 – Report Generation completed Twelve weeks after project start 6.2 PROJECT TIMELINE You can include a gantt chart or another visual (optional)
LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 8 of 13 7 COST This details the cost of the assessment in hardware and resources. If the scope of the assessment is limited to analysis only, the cost of the assessment simply be the cost of the human resources required over the life of the assessment project. In addition to the assessor, the project will require two engineers on an as needed basis and is expected to take a total of 12 weeks. The utilization rate for all team members is 50% throughout the project. The recommended corporate salary rate per engineer for planning purposes is $80/hour. Since the assessor is also a member of the engineering staff, all team members will use the same rate. Based on the detailed plan, the total hours and cost for each team member are as follows: Assessor: 64 hours @ $80/hour = $5,120 Engineer1: 220 hours @ $80/hour = $17.600 Engineer2: 124 hours @ $80/hour = $9,920 If you need to purchase instruments and equipment to perform the assessment, have administrative costs, travel, etc., you estimate these and add them to your HR costs. Purchase of Sensors: $3500 Installation: $4000 Report Assembly: $3000 Transportation: $1000 Total project cost: $ 44,1 40

LNG Fuel Sender Technology Assessment Plan Page 9 of 13 8 RISK ASSESSMENT This should list out all the risks you see with the assessment. Have the matrix in the appendix which details what the impact actually means. Appendix E contains the risk matrix and impact definitions. Using the risk matrix, we can assign an impact value for each of the identified risks. Table 3 lists each project risk along with its impact and rationale. Risk Impact Rationale Risk A Explosion High Risk B Lost Indication Medium Risk C Reading Error Low Etc.. Low Table 3: Project risks with impacts and rationales. 9 APPENDIX A: REFERENCES Sensor Failure Ignites Fuel- loss of life potential Tank OverPressure- Pressure relief valve opens Recalibrate Sensor
