Interview an OT and an OTA
who work in different practice settings. Schedule both interviews by email or preferred method of contact as noted in the assignment. Conduct interview and write self-reflection paper to demonstrate your learning and application of information gained from the interviews. 1) Read Rubric and familiarize yourself with grading criteria
2) You are tasked with interviewing two occupational therapy practitioners: one OT and one OTA which I have assigned to you. You will write a formal APA paper to share your results.
3) The objective of this assignment is to compare OT and OTA roles, explore the OTA and OTR relationship to understand what makes strong relationships, and what hinders relationships which might negatively impact the client. You should gain insight into different practice settings.
4) Interviews can be done by phone, skype, facetime/other internet method or face to face.
5) Each student should send an introduction email to the OT and OTA assigned to them, to set up a time for an interview unless your individual indicates calling is the preferred method.
At a minimum, ask the following:
Introductory questions:
1. How long have you been an occupational therapy assistant or occupational therapist? And how long have you worked in this setting? Have you worked in other settings?
2. How many hours do you work per week?
3. What do you love about your job?
4. Identify something that is challenging about your job? Or that you would change?
Questions 5 and 6 look at role delineation and skills related to specific settings.

5a. OTA specific: How is your role as an occupational therapy assistant different in this setting than that of the occupational therapist? How does the OTR delegate specific parts of the OT process (evaluation, plan of care, goals, treatment/intervention, progress notes, and discharge to the OTA? What parts of the process are common for the OTA to complete? 5b.OTR specific: What does your role as an OTR include? Do you supervise an OTA? If the OTR supervises an OTA, ask about how the OTR delegates to the OTA and what specific parts of the OT process (evaluation, plan of care, goals, treatment/intervention, progress notes, and discharge are handled between the OTR and OTA. What parts of the process are common for the OT to delegate to the OTA? 6. OTA specific: What are aspects of your role that are the same as the occupational therapist?
7.a. OTA specific: How often are you supervised by an OT? Is the OT in your area? How do you document the supervision process? 7b. OTR specific: How often do you supervise the OTA and how do you document supervision?
8. What opportunities do you have in your workplace for advancement?

Finally, Create and Submit an APA typed, double spaced, 12 font paper (with title page and reference page). Use headings are desired. Include the following

Please read the rubric to make sure you answer all points. Write a professional paper organized in paragraphs using headers and personal pronouns as appropriate.
Name of interviewees & their practice settings, years of experience, and whether you met face to face, used Skype (or other virtual face to face technology), or via phone.
2. A synopsis of the critical points of the interviews; includes at least three points from each OT practitioner.
Compare and contrast any significant differences between practice settings.
Use Chapter 4 Mahle and Ward to
support or guide your thoughts.
Write about your learning concerning application of OT/OTA roles and responsibilities, supervision, and role of the OTA. Use documents from class, NCBOT, and AOTA as needed to support your learning.
Has your view of occupational therapy changed, or your view of a practice setting changed? Why or why not? Write a self-reflective conclusion of summarizing learning from assignment not previously noted.
