Assignment 2 – Familiarization Exercise Topic: As discussed in the textbook, the two major components of the contract (bid) documents are the project manual and the drawings. I have furnished you with both for the Simpson Strong Tie Demonstration Lab building on the campus of Cal Poly SLO. Assignment: Working in your assigned groups and using the project manual and drawings; provide the following deliverables. For each item provide the required information, show your work, state all assumptions, and reference your answer to the locations where the information was found on the plans and project manual. Deliverables: Part I: Identify the contract documents which you have been presented with: 1. Some set of drawings have been given to you, please identify what you have been given. Is anything missing? Does it cross check with the cover sheet? We were given floor plans. Nothing is missing. Yes, its cross checks with the cover sheet. 2. Some project manual has been given to you, please identify what you have been given. Is anything missing and how do you know? We were given bid documents, a description of the project, sample forms, and specifications. We were also given general conditions, supplement conditions, and technical specifications. Nothing is missing. 3. What other documents or items would you like to have to help you better understand the project? A project schedule. 4. What type of construction and applicable codes are for this job? Part II: There are several general issues which include answering: 1. What unusual features does this project have? The project features an access bridge from the new construction to the existing facilities spanning approximately 10 feet. 2. What basic material types are being used by this building (outline / develop your shopping list for the project)? Basic materials being used on this project are heavy lumber, concrete, steel, and insulation. 3. What basic building services systems is this project utilizing? Some basic building services systems used for this project are sewage and draining, plumbing, electric and lighting. 4. What structural systems are supporting this building? Structural steel framing, cold formed metal framing, glued laminated construction, and concrete work.
Part III: Answer some basic questions about the project contract documents: 1. How many square feet is the building pad? 5,000 square feet 2. How tall is the building? 1,950 square feet 3. Summarize what minimum security and site procedures must be followed? Conduct a PSP, ALWAYS wear PPE, emergency response plan, and set up safe guards. 4. How many days does the architect have to review the RFI’s and Submittals? For the RFI’S No later than 10 calendar days and for submittals 14 calendar days. 5. How many paint samples must be provided to the owner for review? 14 paint samples 6. Briefly describe the DVBE and prevailing wage requirements? 7. Describe identify the temperature which membrane roof adhesive must be stored? 8. What submittals are being asked for the window subcontractor? 9. What is the length of this project in calendar days? 330 calendar days. 10. What are the liquidated damages (if any) for this project ? $500 for each calendar day completion is delayed beyond the time prescribed for the project. 11. Is a performance or payment bond required for this project, are there any alternatives to this, and what is the bid bond value? 12. On the bid form, in addition to the base price what is the owner asking for? 13. Are there supplemental conditions, why or why not? 14. What size base plate is typically used for the columns? 15. What type of domestic water piping must be used for above grade distribution?
