Abstract:
This project outlines Starbucks Canada's Integrated Management System (IMS) strategy, emphasizing blending ISO 45001 standards. The design addresses vital topics covered in class, considering both functional and systematic approaches. By developing an action plan and schedule for putting the management into place and keeping it up to date, the primary objective is to improve critical thinking, problem-solving, and information management abilities.
Introduction
Starbucks Canada is a well-known chain of coffee shops that places a high priority on the welfare of both its employees and customers, as well as on product quality and sustainability. In order to continuously develop and be in compliance with international standards, Starbucks Canada has strongly implemented ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards into its operations
(Starbucks, 2014)
. While ISO 14001 is an environmental management standard that offers a framework for handling environmental responsibilities, ISO 9001 is a quality management standard that outlines standards
for a quality management system
(Peiper, 2022)
. But they do not have ISO 45001 (Occupational et al.). It is the foundation for managing employee health and safety provided by the occupational health and safety management standard ISO 45001. Starbucks Canada accepts ISO 9001 certification and considers non-food suppliers who have a current certificate from an organization that is accredited and relevant to the business to be involved with Starbucks as meeting the minimal standards for non-food quality
(Peiper, 2022)
. Starbucks Canada has also adopted the Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practises one of the first complete sets of sustainability guidelines for the coffee sector that outside experts have approved
(Peiper, 2022)
. 2 | P a g e
Since launching its first LEED®-certified location in Hillsboro, Oregon, in 2005, Starbucks Canada has also been a pioneer in the green construction sector
(Peiper, 2022)
. Starbucks Canada is dedicated to fostering a future that is more resilient, equitable, and sustainable for the earth, communities, and coffee
(Peiper, 2022)
.
Discussion 1. The IMS Plan's Goals
This IMS plan's primary goal is to give Starbucks Canada's operations a thorough foundation for incorporating the previously mentioned ISO standards. By developing a road map for implementing and maintaining management system standards, this plan seeks to improve critical thinking, problem-solving, and information management abilities.
2. Integration of ISO Standards:
ISO 45001 - Management of Occupational Health and Safety
The focus of ISO 45001 is on the stakeholders' and employees' health and safety. Starbucks Canada will implement this standard to improve workplace security, lower occupational risks, and safeguard employee welfare.
3. Assessment of Starbucks Canada
Function-Based Approach
Starbucks Canada works in functional silos, with separate departments in charge of
quality, the environment, and health and safety issues. This strategy could result in waste and duplication.
Systematic Approach
A systematic approach concentrates on streamlining procedures, encouraging cross-functional cooperation, and integrating management systems into a unified framework. Starbucks Canada is aware that efficient integration requires a systematic approach.
Combining Systematic and Functional Approaches
Starbucks Canada will use functional and systematic approaches to ensure that each standard's particular criteria are met while upholding general cohesiveness.

Gap Analysis
Starbucks Canada will conduct a thorough gap analysis to find inconsistencies between its procedures and ISO 45001 criteria.
Action Plan
Starbucks Canada will create an action plan to address identified gaps and make appropriate adjustments in processes and procedures based on the gap analysis findings.
Procedure Development
Starbucks Canada will create thorough procedures for each component that needs a
separate set of guidelines to assure compliance with the ISO requirements. Employees will be informed of these practices, and they will be documented.
5. Schedule Plan
Phase1: Preparation
-Identifying the IMS implementation team in Phase 1 and conducting awareness and training sessions
- Start the gap analysis
- Establish integration goals
Phase 2: Implementation: Create and put in place the required procedures
- Combine the management systems for quality, the environment, and health and safety.
- Create key performance indicators (KPIs) - Keep track of advancement and compliance
Phase 3: Monitoring and evaluation throughout
- Review KPIs and performance measures regularly.
-Perform internal audits.
- Find areas where there is room for development. - Deal with any inconsistencies
Phase 4: Maintenance: Regularly update policies and instructions.
- Keep up with changes to ISO standards
- Encourage a culture of ongoing development
- Get ready for audits of external certification
Starbucks Canada's approach to implementing ISO 45001 standards into their operations is described in this IMS plan. To achieve conformity with the objectives
of each measure, the strategy incorporates functional and systematic techniques.
Benefits of Implementing ISO 45001 4 | P a g e
Starbucks can get various advantages, including financial advantages, from implementing ISO 45001. The following are some advantages of adopting ISO 45001:
1.
Cost savings: Implementing ISO 45001 can assist businesses in saving money on expenses like medical bills, workers' compensation claims, and lost productivity that are related to workplace accidents and injuries
(Malinda & Soediantono, 2022)
. Organizations can minimize potential legal obligations and reputational harm by preventing accidents and injuries.
2.
Productivity gains: Since workers are less likely to miss work due to illness or injury, productivity gains might result from a safer and healthier workplace
(Morgado, Silva, & Fonseca, 2019)
. Higher output, greater quality, and enhanced customer satisfaction may emerge from this, which may increase revenue and profitability.
3.
Return on investment (ROI): Although implementing ISO 45001 can be expensive initially, an efficient OHSMS can help businesses save money over time by lowering costs related to accidents and injuries, boosting productivity, and improving their reputation
(Karanikas, Bruschi, & Brown, 2021)
.
4.
Improved employee morale:
Employee engagement and morale can be raised by implementing ISO 45001, which can assist businesses in developing a culture of safety and health
(Malinda & Soediantono, 2022)
. The financial line of the company may benefit from lower turnover rates, greater employee satisfaction, and improved teamwork as a result.
5.
Improved credibility: Obtaining ISO 45001 certification can help Starbucks stand among stakeholders, such as clients, vendors, investors, and regulators.
Increased trust, loyalty, and business prospects may result from this, which may help the company make money
(Malinda & Soediantono, 2022)
.
6.
Reduced insurance costs: Organizations can show their dedication to workplace safety and lower the risk of accidents and injuries by applying ISO 45001. As a result, insurance premiums and other associated expenditures may decline
(Karanikas, Bruschi, & Brown, 2021)
.
Conclusion
6.1 Summary of IMS Plan
5 | P a g e
Starbucks Canada's approach to implementing ISO 45001 standards into their operations is described in this IMS plan. To achieve conformity with the objectives
of each measure, the strategy incorporates functional and systematic techniques.
6.2 Expected Results
Starbucks Canada anticipates that effective incorporation of ISO standards will improve product quality, reduce environmental impact, improve employee safety, and raise customer happiness.
6.3 The Importance of Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
This project improves critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by requiring rigorous analysis, gap identification, and strategic planning to integrate several management systems successfully.
6.4 Information Management Keeping track of progress, documenting processes, and adhering to ISO standards depend on effective information management. Starbucks Canada will prioritize information management to make this IMS plan successful.
