CJ 120 Module Five Assignment One Table Template Loden’s Wheel Factor Quote/Information Prevalent Factors Sharanda Jones Case 1. Geographic Location “Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department conducted a large sweep in the city of Terrell, Texas. Netting more than 100 people, all of them black.” o This quote shows that if Sharanda Jones was located in a different city doing the exact same thing she may not have been arrested and convicted. 2. Experiences “Too poor to afford a ‘dope lawyer’.” o This quote shows that her experience of being poor made drug selling/distributing seem as her only option and made it so she could not afford a decent lawyer to help her get a lessened sentence. “Jones had grown up poor, raised by her grandmother after her mother was left quadriplegic by a car crash.” o Shows that due to her difficult experiences growing up could have shaped her to fall victim to the drug world. She had no parental supervision, only her grandmother who could have also been taking care of Jones’ mother. With little to no supervision, comes little to no guidance. Therefore, she was an easy target for the supplier. 3. Race “Among (drug-offenders) thousands of nonviolent offenders are sentenced to life without parole… Most are poor and 4 in 5 are African-American or Hispanic.” o This quote shows how influential race is on all matters of the criminal justice system. Along with showing how being a person of color makes you more likely to get a longer sentence. 4. Cultural Events I was unable to find any quotes for this guess of mine. 5. World Events “I wanted to show a human face behind the numbers and show the sacrifice of human capital for the war on drugs.” o This quote shows that a reason for Jones’ harsh punishment was due to the global campaign to fight the war on drugs. Additional Factors Additional Resources
1. Socioeconomic Status “Too poor to afford a ‘dope lawyer’.” o This quote shows that her experience of being poor made drug selling/distributing seem as her only option and made it so she could not afford a decent lawyer to help her get a lessened sentence. “Jones had grown up poor, raised by her grandmother after her mother was left quadriplegic by a car crash.” Shows that due to her socioeconomic status, growing up could have shaped her to fall victim to the drug world, for the money. 2. Gender “Joseph Antoine III, who also cooperated with the government in exchange for a lower sentence, testified that he was the person in Houston who had sold kilograms of cocaine to Jones.” o This shows that Joseph who is a man, got a lesser sentence for doing about the same thing that Jones was convicted for. The article later states him and other witnesses in the case have all been released since the case happened in the 90s. 3. Work Content/Field “But Jones, who started working when she was 14, had an entrepreneurial streak, opening her own hair salon and a burger joint before starting a Southern-style restaurant in Dallas with a woman from Terrell who was a Dallas police officer. A friend told Jones she could earn thousands more if she "got into the game." "It was fast money," she says now.” o This shows that due to Jones’ work field she was introduced to people who encouraged her to “get in the game,” meaning the drug world. If she had a different job or didn’t have to work since she was 14 years old, she may have never been introduced to these people. References: Martyn, A. (2015, October 13). Sari Horwitz, & Nikki Kahn. (7 C.E., Winter 2015). From a first arrest to a life sentence. Washington Post, The. Reflection: How easily did the quotes (or information) you found align to the factors you initially predicted? Was it more difficult to find examples for certain factors? Why or why not? Did you find multiple examples for any factors (even if you didn’t include those examples in your table)? Why do you think it might have been easier to find examples for certain factors? The factors I initially predicted were all easy to find quotes for, except the Cultural Events factor. I searched in various areas, and I could not find cultural events that affect the criminal justice system. Most of the events I found were world events, historical, or even political. But none that were only cultural. I believe this was difficult because cultural events normally get public attention from the media. Which all know the media misleads its viewers. Media makes all events political, which makes it very difficult to find only cultural events. On the other hand, I was able to find ample evidence about race being a factor that influences interactions with the criminal justice system. Just in looking at the Sharanda Jones case, I found evidence for her race being a factor. I know from reading the resources this week that if I combed through, I could have found almost an endless amount that proves race to be a factor. It was also easy to find her experiences as factors. How Jones’ lived and things she had been through in her life were monumental in what made her turn to the drug world. Do you think if she had been raised in a financially well-off, 2 parent, 2 income household she would have been as easily persuaded by the money in the drug world? No, she would not be persuaded by that factor because she would never fear not having enough money to cover basic needs. I believe it is easier to find evidence for certain factors because they are mainstream. Almost everyone knows what race is and most people understand that past experiences influence your future. I also believe that the people who are advocating for Jones, put a lot of influence on humanizing her. They did not just focus on the statistics. They showed bits of the life she had, which taps into people’s empathy. So, in this case I believe it was easier to find support for the experience factor because that was her advocates’ goal to show her experiences.
