His-200 Writing Plan Submission: The Trail of Tears
The focus of my historical analysis has been The Trail of Tears. I chose this topic because I am from the area that was impacted, I am also a Cherokee Native as well and my daughter is over half Cherokee Native, this topic is a hot button for us. I strive to understand why
something else couldn’t have been arranged and why the Cherokee leaders signed the agreement that forcibly removed them from their lands. I also want to learn what was the true reason behind
the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Was it gold? Was it racism? If it was gold why would the leaders of the Cherokee Nation sign something that gives into greed? I want to understand what my people experienced so that I can better explain to my daughter what the trail of tears is. I also
seek to understand when and how the Native people were assimilated into the American culture or were they always THE American culture? Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant? The Trail of Tears was the result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, signed into law by President Andrew Jackson. This Act would relocate many native groups west to Oklahoma. I am choosing to focus on the Cherokee Nation for my historical analysis. This event is significant to American history so we do not repeat this mistake. The effects of this divide can still be felt
today in many reaches of the nation. The Native Nations will say “My land was stolen” and “The
white man killed my people.” This event is crucial to understand so that we as a nation may start to heal from the effects of The Trail of Tears. Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes these sources appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices? The two secondary sources I am using are The Library of Congress to access links to encyclopedias such as The Encyclopedia of Alabama, which has an article on the Trail of Tears, and a book from the Shapiro Library, “The Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation.” John Ehle. (1989). Trail of Tears : The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation: Vol. Anchor Books ed
. Anchor. The Encyclopedia of Alabama has an article that outlines The Trail of
Tears and what happened. (Hill, 2008) The similarities between the content of my sources are that they both go over what happened in the historical event that I've chosen, The Trail of Tears. The difference between them is that the book goes into a deeper context of The Trail of Tears whereas the article just outlines the event. These show different perspectives which is good for investigating my questions. The thought process I had when searching for these was “Ok what is going to yield a better connection to the events?” That is why I originally went to The Library of Congress, if it’s an American historical event, The Library of Congress will have loads of
information on it. The book is good because it comes from someone who is native to the area in which The Trail of Tears occurred. Describe at least two primary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: How do these sources relate to your secondary sources? What do they add to your understanding of the event? What makes them appropriate and relevant
for investigating your event? The first primary source that I will use is a letter from 1818 letter from Cherokee chiefs to Tennessee Governor Joseph McMinn criticizing the Treaty of the Cherokee Agency. (
An 1818
Letter From Cherokee Chiefs to Tennessee Governor Joseph McMinn Criticizing the Treaty of the Cherokee Agency.
, n.d.) This letter will help me understand why some Cherokee Natives left and why the Leaders signed the treaty, to begin with. The second primary source that I am using is a letter from 1837 message from Brigadier General John E. Wool to the Cherokee Nation warning them of the consequences of resisting removal. (
An 1837 Message From Brigadier General John E. Wool to the Cherokee Nation Warning Them of the Consequences of Resisting Removal.
, n.d.) This will help me understand the fear that the Cherokee Nation must have felt during this time. Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? My new research question is at what point were the native peoples assimilated into American culture? Or were they ever accepted into American Culture?

Identify an audience that would be interested in your historical event and research question. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message?
The audience that would most likely be interested in my historical event and research question is my professor and maybe a group of native high school kids. I think kids learning about The Trail of Tears would benefit most from hearing my message. Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand historical terminology and principles associated with your event, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience? I could tailor my message to my audience by keeping my tone very formal and very academic by stating facts and including evidence from when The Trail of Tears took place. If some of the terminology isn’t understood I could include footnotes with keywords and their definitions. To make sure my audience fully understood the event (Given I was speaking to them) I could take five or so minutes to answer any question after each slide.
