Anna-Nicole Doucette HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University 23 August 2020 8-2 Module Eight Short Responses 1. Consider the following statement: The support of non-Native Alaskans was an important factor leading to the settlement of Alaska Native land claims. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, this conclusion is consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block. The non- Natives had prior knowledge about the Natives being mistreated by the United States and learned from those mistakes. Because of this, they took a different approach when dealing with the Alaska Natives and the United States Courts were more sympathetic to the Natives. The federal government also wanted to help the Natives which deeply contrasts their past behavior.  2. Consider the following statement: ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, this conclusion is consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block. This was a fair settlement compared to the treatment of the Cherokee Natives. The government was willing to work towards a compromise with the Natives this time around, as opposed to forcing them into a settlement like past conflicts. Under the ANSCA, the Natives received land they historically used and dropped other claims in other lands in Alaska for a cash
settlement. This benefitted both parties involved instead of hurting the Natives for government gain.  3. Consider the following statement: ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, this conclusion is consistent with evidence presented in this learning block. The Alaska Permanent Fund, a state fund that collects 25 percent of all oil-land royalties and invests those funds for the benefit of all Alaskans, benefits white Alaskans and Natives. The fund amounts to billions of dollars yearly that pays out to each man, woman, and child in the state. That means that every qualified Alaskan benefits under this fund.  4. For an American Literature course: What skills from this course would you use to develop a brief essay on the significance of Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," a poem written in the summer of 1865? To develop an essay on Walt Whitman's work, it would be necessary to have reading comprehension skills to properly analyze Whitman's work and his intent behind this specific piece. A knowledge of historical events that occurred during the summer of 1865 is helpful to further understand the context behind the piece. I will also need to develop a thesis statement and conduct research which are skills that were honed and developed within this course. Knowing how to tailor my essay to a specific audience will also be necessary. I will also need to format a reference list with proper citations as well as ensure my essay has proper APA formatting. All of these skills were a part of this course and will be helpful in future courses.  5. For a Sociology course: What skills from this course would you use to produce an
annotated bibliography for your course research project? To produce an annotated bibliography for a course research project, a knowledge of APA format is necessary. I would also need to understand how to properly conduct research, as well as the differences between primary and secondary sources. All of these skills were developed within this course.  6. For a Business course: What skills from this course would you use to decide between two different investment proposals? To decide between two different investment proposals in a business course, I would need to research skills to evaluate the differences between the proposals and understand the evidence being presented. I would need to understand the context of each proposal, as well as what each offers within their stance to find the best potential investment. These skills were developed within this course.  7. How can history serve as a lens for the rest of the academic program you'll pursue at SNHU? Has this course changed the way you think about what you want to study? Why or why not? Please respond to this question in two to three sentences, using proper grammar. History can serve as a powerful lens for the rest of academic program I am pursuing at SNHU. As a creative writing major, having historical knowledge can ensure my creative pieces are just as factual as they are interesting. Understanding the past can also influence how I pursue obstacles that come my way. This course has changed the way that I think because I more deeply understand how history can be analyzed. It is not as simple as what happened and what people thought. There are so many contexts in which an event can be understood, and it is important to evaluate as many as possible to truly understand an event.

This will be valuable in my major as I know to be more critical and analytical when composing my own work now.  8. What did you learn about one of these topics or historical events that was new or surprising to you? Explain in at least two to three sentences; be sure to use proper grammar. Many of the topics covered were interesting, often conveying fresh takes on ways to understand the significance of these events. For instance, I did not know school desegregation took as long as it did to eradicate, and that integration was delayed as long as it was. It was surprising to me that integration took so long to achieve as previous history courses tend to talk about it as if it was much longer ago. This just shows how much progress has occurred in such a short time, as well as how much more is needed.  9. In one paragraph, explain which parts of your historical investigation and analysis were most interesting to you. Which parts were less interesting? Be sure to use proper grammar. My topic was the Boston busing crisis. This event was very interesting to research and I enjoyed learning about an event that I previously had no knowledge about. It was unfortunate that this event actually made the desegregation process more difficult to achieve due to the backlash and opposing forces that surfaced as a result of the busing crisis. The crisis also prolonged desegregation, slowing integration progress.
