2-2 Module Two Short Responses
1.
What types
of primary and secondary sources will you need to use to support the topic
you are examining in your essay? You don't need the actual sources yet, but you should have an idea of what they might be (such as an eyewitness account of an event,
for example).
The topic I am examining in my essay is the Boston desegregation busing crisis. There are many primary and secondary resources that I can use to support my topic. Primary sources that I can use include oral histories of the event, newspaper articles written surrounding the movement, photos of people experiencing the desegregation, videos of press conferences during that time period, and city records. Secondary sources that I can use include scholarly articles, TV specials dramatizing the event, and newspaper articles written decades later to commemorate the event.
2.
What are two or three keywords you could use to look for sources to answer this question?
Searching by keywords is the most common way to research sources since it uses "native language." Keywords that could be used to look for resources to answer this question are "Brooklyn Bridge," "sandhogs," or "New York construction industry."
3.
What subject terms can you use to continue your search?
2
To continue my search, I could use the terms "New York City tunnels," "New York City communes," or "construction by Irish immigrants."
4.
When you search for "construction," you get a lot of extraneous answers. What [?]Boolean operators[/?] and corresponding search terms could you use to narrow your search?
To narrow my search when researching construction, Boolean operators I could use are "construction AND Irish immigrants," "construction AND Brooklyn Bridge," or "sandhogs AND construction."
