CSTU 101 How do you look at history? There are three different ways that people view history, however, we will only be focusing on two views. The first view that we will discuss was more popular among the Greeks. The ancient Greeks were known for their cyclical view of history. This is the thought that history sort of goes around in circles, constantly repeating itself with no change. “ What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” ( Ecclesiastes 1:9 ) Furthermore, they believed that there was no significance to the beginning of the universe and that there wouldn’t be an end to the universe either. The second view that we will brief on was more common with the Christian community. The Christians had a different view of history, that was more biblical. The believed that the beginning of the world held a purpose, and that the world was moving toward a future that was created by its’ creator. This view was known as a linear-progressive view of history. It can better be described in terms of a line that may go through peaks, but ultimately moves upwards. “We are significant. We are going somewhere, and that somewhere has been identified definitely by God.” ( Understanding the day of the lord, part 1 2018) As you can see, the Greeks view of history was much different from the Christians view of history. As stated, the Greeks did not believe that there was any advancement available within our history. They certainly did not believe that there would be an end to the universe but rather history would only continue to repeat itself. The Greeks also believed that the gods and goddesses were the ones who were in control of the universe. Whereas, the Christians believed that the universe was created by the Lord and as such, history was not repeating itself but moving forward to the coming of Christ. (325)
