Out of the countless methodologies and concepts we have covered in HIST 116, the
application of critical thinking and cross cultural understanding stood out the most. We have
reviewed narratives from primary sources, secondary sources, cultural documentaries, and
others. While analyzing these resources I utilized critical thinking. By definition, critical thinking
2
is an objective analysis and evaluation of a fact. Throughout the semester, I became more
familiar with the application of critical thinking. I found myself constantly using critical thinking
because it is essential for the comprehension of course material. Additionally, while preparing for
discussions and completing assignments I utilized critical thinking. This course had enhanced my
cross-cultural understanding as well.
Considering the application of critical thinking was extensively utilized during this
course, I decided to discuss the application of critical thinking, a methodology covered in this
course, within an area of personal interest. We have also discussed cross-cultural understanding
to a great extent. The basis of this reflective essay will respond to the following prompts. How do
you see the relevance of critical thinking skills (author-audience -content -context analytical
framework) to an area of interest in the twenty-first century? Do you think cross culture
understanding would be useful in an area that interest you?
To continue, I have decided to focus this reflective essay on an area of personal interest
rather than my field of study. I have always found healthcare and science complex and
interesting. After careful consideration, I decided to challenge myself, and look into the
application of critical thinking in Nursing. I have completed extensive research that highlights
the implications of critical thinking within Nursing. I realized healthcare workers in general are
some of the best critical thinkers. The profession of nursing is multifaceted. There are countless
specialties nurses can pursue. Specialties include Gynecology, Obstetrics, Cardiology,
Anesthetics, and Pediatrics. No matter the area of nursing, critical thinking is applicable. In fact,
the utilization of critical thinking is not just recommended, this skill is
necessary
to be successful
as a professional.
Critical thinking is a vital tool used in the profession of Nursing. The roles of a nurse
3
vary from a practitioner, director, advocate, consultant, educator, researcher, and decision maker.
Urhan et al. (2021) go on to support a claim I previously stated. Critical thinking is one of the
most essential skills a nurse needs to fulfill their role. They continue to provide a rationale for the
importance of critical thinking as a nurse. Essentially, critical thinking is necessary to ensure
patient safety and enhance patient-centered care. In the twenty-first century, nurses are expected
to act with urgency and keep their patients safe at the same time. Urhan et al. address this subject
in depth, “Nurses who can think critically contribute to increasing the quality of patient-centered
nursing care served to patients and improving patient safety practices by providing more
evidence-based nursing practice”. Additionally, the nature of healthcare concerns in the twenty-
first century is different from those 30 years ago. The application of critical thinking allows
nurses to adjust to varying healthcare needs and prioritize patient safety while acting with a sense
of urgency. The following journal article supports this position, “As a result of the interaction of
many factors such as the development of technology, increasing competition in the economy,
changes in lifestyles and epidemics, individuals’ and communities’ health care needs are also
changing. Nurses working in clinical settings need critical thinking skills to find solutions for
novel problems that occur in parallel with the changing health needs” (Urhan et al., 2021).
Because the application of critical thinking is essential, continuing education with a focus
on critical thinking is a requirement for nurses to continue their practice. Urhan et al. discuss
critical thinking and continuing education, “Nurse managers and educators should create
practical strategies to improve critical thinking competence among clinical nurses considering
related factors. Based on the study results, hospital managers may encourage nurses to apply for
a master's or other higher education programmes; they may hold in-service clinical education
programmes and give roles to manager nurses”. Overall, critical thinking is mandatory in the

profession of Nursing.
In nursing, another term for cross-cultural understanding is cultural consideration.
Courses such as world history develop cross-cultural understanding. Within courses, students
learn about traditions from cultures around the world which builds cultural competency. Cultural
competence is the basis of cultural consideration. As the world, especially America, becomes
more diverse so does healthcare. In the healthcare setting, cultural consideration is essential to
patient-centered care. While providing care nurses must recognize bias and possess cultural
competency. The following article highlights cultural consideration in nursing, “With the
widening sociocultural diversification of the patient population, it is now imperative that nurse
educators establish cultural competence as a graduate capability and examine ways of addressing
the continuing decline in standards of care”(Markey & Okantey, 2021). Overtime, patient reports
of cultural insensitivity has increased. In response to these complaints interventions have been
set in place to resolve these issues.
Markey and Okantey further discuss the development of
cultural competence, “ Global reports of cultural insensitivity continue despite the growing
evidence highlighting the importance of nurturing cultural competence development in nurse
education and practice. Undergraduate nurse education needs to embrace opportunities to engrain
values based learning in curriculum design and utilise innovative learning and teaching
approaches that ensure cultural competence is more explicitly developed”. Overall, cultural
cross-cultural understanding, cultural competency, and cultural consideration are applicable in
nursing.
In conclusion, the profession of nursing is an area that peaks my interest. Therefore, I
decided to discuss the relevance of critical thinking skills and application of cross cultural
understanding in nursing. I utilized journal articles support the relevance of concepts covered in

class. The content covered has proven to be relevant in regards to the legitimate application of
critical thinking and cultural understanding in nursing. Regardless of application within a
profession or an area of interest, critical thinking is a beneficial skill across the board.
