Assignment Overview
For your first milestone assignment, you will submit a draft introduction to your final project and an outline of the full
project. At this point, it is not necessary for you to know all of the details and examples you plan to use; rather, this
assignment will help you organize your thoughts and make sure you remember to include each section of the final
project.
Preparing Your Outline
Use the template on the next page to prepare your Milestone One submission.
The text in bold should remain the same, as it provides the basic structure of your final project in accordance
with the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document.
You should change all text that appears in blue italics and replace it with your thoughts and plans for your final
project.
The final project requires you to address several different topics within an overall discussion of how globalization
impacted the development of the modern state. You will answer specific questions about economic, social, philosophical,
political, and external factors that contributed to globalization and the development of states, and explain the overall
historical significance of the emergence of the modern state. In your outline, you must include each of those sections
and some preliminary thoughts on how you may answer each of the questions that are posed. Refer to the
Final Project
Guidelines and Rubric
document for the specific questions that must be answered in each section.
Feel free to include questions for your instructor as bullet points throughout the outline, particularly if there are areas
where you feel unsure of how to proceed. Refer to the Milestone One Rubric before you start working on this assignment
to make sure you understand the expectations for this assignment and how it will be graded.

Introduction With Thesis Statement
From 1500 until the present, globalization has had an impact on the West because of advancements in
technology and a drive to discover new trade routes and civilizations in the quest of wealth and growth.
European sailors explored the world's rivers and built long-distance marine channels, enabling worldwide
economic and agricultural trade. Agreement on administration and governance was impossible without the
participation of nation states. Another claim on how the Catholic Church's decline and the political leadership of
early rulers contributed to the rise of nation-states in the West between 1500 and the present. Nation states
have been essential to the social, political, and economic development of the West. To preserve more overtly
religious values from actual changes that would have included toleration, Italian and German nation-states
evolved in the west between 1500 and the present.

i.
Social Forces
A new governing elite in Germanic Central Europe had a brief window of opportunity to embrace liberal and
socialist ideals after the rebellion of 1848, but neither the working class nor the center was able to prevail. The
reason 1848 is still referred to as the "Year of Revolutions" is the quantity and variety of revolutions that
occurred throughout Europe. Rebellions occurred in Germany, France, Italy, and the Austrian Empire for various
reasons.
It is worth noting that the remake of the Germanic countries was unable to establish new social or governmental
structures. The Germanic states founded their own states near their origins. When the uprising began, all the
ingredients for a massive uprising seemed to be in place, but a few key pieces were missing shared beliefs.
Central and rank-and-file workers established a structure early in the rebellion so that their agreement would be
recognized in a united Germany. But the uprising was suppressed because the white-collar class was
unresponsive and rank-and-file workers were divided, shattering the traditional beliefs necessary for the uprising
to succeed.

Philosophies and Religions
There is no "beginning" or "end" to the Enlightenment. While some claim it survived the French Revolution,
others claim it started in the middle of the 17th century. The 'end date' of the Enlightenment is hazy since the
design was influenced by Romantic beliefs, though its influence lasted into the nineteenth century. Even so,
Germany and Europe were transformed by the Enlightenment. Enlightenment ideas of popular sovereignty,
equality, and liberty inspired political unrest that spread these ideals across much of the Atlantic Basin.

Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803) praised the Germans of the late 18th century and their lovely
language. Herder and other early cultural nationalists embraced community identity in reaction to
Enlightenment thinkers' scientific endeavors.

This section supports my claim since it will need a prevailing belief that these countries learned
how to build representative authorities and correspond power while developing nation-
states and national distinctiveness, on many different levels.
