Kohut, A. (2020, July 28). From the archives: 50 years ago: Mixed views about civil rights
but support for Selma demonstrators. Pew Research Center. Retrieved June 8, 2023, from

rights-but-support-for-selma-demonstrators/
There are two subjects in this source. The first subject focuses on the way the government
was attempting to integrate the country. The second subject focuses on an incident in
Alabama. While the south believed the pace of integration to be too quick, most Americans
outside of the south felt that the pace of integration was too quick. Both of these groups chose
to side with the protestors of Selma and show support against Alabama.

3. The Massachusetts legislature passed the Racial Imbalance Act (1965) in response to a

1. The Boston public school system had one of the highest dropout rates in the 1971-1972
school year.
2. Within the first three years the schools were desegregated, within the 60,000 students, there
were more racial minorities than white students.
3. When Raymond L. Flynn was mayor of Boston, he sponsored and supported the
abolishment of the school system and replace it with a panel that is appointed by the mayor.

Module 6 Short Responses – Question 4
Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in
mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that
you will use to support this assertion. Describe one consequence of the event, and
explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this
assertion.
The primary cause of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was that women did not have the
same rights that men did. After the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to
vote, was passed, women continued to fight for more equal rights. The ERA proposed,
"equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by
any state on account of sex" (EqualRightAmendment.org, n.d, History Section). A
consequence to the ERA being passed is that women and other minorities are continuing to
fight for more equality. Due to the failure of the full ratification of the ERA in 1982, Illinois
and Nevada ratified it (EqualRightAmendment.org, n.d, History Section).
