THEME:
France’s role in the European development of colonial Michigan
[1] What was France’s original goal in colonizing the St. Lawrence River Valley and Great Lakes
basin? When those efforts failed France turned to what trade to fund their colonial efforts?
In the St. Lawrence River Valley and the Great Lakes region, France originally intended to
establish a trading empire to acquire furs. The New French were primarily interested in
establishing commercially viable outposts after Franch failed, so they built extensive trading
networks across the island. Native hunters gathered furs, especially beaver pelts, and exchanged
them for French items, such as glass beads, from native hunters.
[2] Explain the role played by these three (3) French explorers: Jacques Cartier, Samuel de
Champlain, and Robert de la Salle in founding France's empire in America?
Jacques Cartier was the first European to navigate the St. Lawrence River, and his explorations
of the river and the Atlantic coast of Canada laid the foundation for later French claims to North
America. Champlain's role was to send an expedition to find a place to establish a colony in the
New World and a fur trade settlement. By sailing along the Mississippi River, Robert la Salle
created the territory of Louisiana by claiming lands surrounding it for France.
[3] Originally New France was governed by private investors, but this all changed with the
succession of Louis XIV to the French throne in 1661. Explain the impact this had by discussing
the roles of two of his most important advisors regarding New World policy: Jean Baptiste
Colbert and Jean Talon.
To set up manufactures and boost trade, Louis XIV assisted Colbert with reorganizing the
administrative and financial affairs of his realm. To correct the gender imbalance and populate
the colony, Talon arranges young women who come from France. Over the course of his
professional career, Jean-Baptiste Colbert held all the great state offices under Louis XIV,
including comptroller-general of finances.
[4] What role did French Catholic/Jesuit Missionaries play in France's colonization of the New
World?
French Jesuit priests made their way to Canada with the aim of converting the First Nations
inhabitants to Catholicism. They played a significant role in the establishment of fundamental
services necessary to sustain the colony's expansion. They made a financial contribution towards
the construction of places of worship, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.
[5] Explain Cadillac’s role in the founding of Detroit. What was Detroit's original name and what
does Detroit mean in French? What was the purpose for the settlement and how was it governed?
Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the location that would become Detroit. Cadillac
requested permission from King Louis XIV to establish a fur trading post in the Great Lakes.
Detroit's original name was Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit, which gave it its French name,
meaning Straight. To protect the French fur trade in the Great Lakes from the English and
Iroquois, the French settled in Detroit. Antoine ruled there until 1710, when his enemies in
Quebec and Paris forced him to move to the new French colony of Louisiana.
[6] How did France’s colonial enterprise abruptly end by the 1760’s?
The Colonial enterprise of France ended abruptly in the 1760s because of the War of the Seven
Years, financial difficulties, and political upheaval that took place during the time. There was no
threat to the British colonies from any foreign military action because of France giving up all its
territories on North American mainland.
