HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Bias in Primary Sources Locate an additional primary source relevant to your historical event. Use it and the primary source you identified in a previous module to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Source One Conduct source analysis on a primary source relevant to your historical event. Attempt to write the APA style citation for your first primary source and include a link to it. You will not be penalized for incorrect format. ABC News Nightline. (2018, December 22). Chernobyl disaster - ABC News Nightline (full broadcast) - April 29, 1986 . YouTube. Retrieved February 1, 2023, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAzmCrEJDuU Respond to the following questions: Who authored or created the primary source? o ABC News Nightline What was the author’s position in society at the time the primary source was created? o The ABC News Nightline’s position in society at the time was to inform the public about the impacts of the disaster. This specific broadcasting is focusing more on the events that are taking place now that the incident was announced, and some impacts have been investigated as well as predictions on what is still on going and how it will be carrying on. When was the primary source created? o April 29 th , 1986 – 3 almost 4 days after the incident. Where was the primary source created, released, or publicized? o The broadcasting was created April 29 th , 1986 in New York City at ABC News Headquarters. Who was the intended audience for the primary source? o The American Public Why was the primary source created? o To inform the United States citizens on the event of Chernoyl, and the impacts that are being discovered. This was a top news issue during the time. Whose perspective(s) is presented in the source? o The perspective of the news outlet is one of a little worry since at this time a cloud is being predicted to carry radioactive materials close to the US. The news outlet is also informing the public that the core is still burning and there are not many answers at this time on how to get it to stop since an event of this caliber as never happened before. 1
Source Two Conduct a source analysis on a primary source relevant to your historical event. Attempt to write the APA style citation for your second primary source and include a link to it. You will not be penalized for incorrect format. • ABCNews. (2012, May 23). Chernobyl nuclear disaster: News report from April 28, 1986 . YouTube. Retrieved January 29, 2023, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmeeEpWxfRY Respond to the following questions: Who authored or created the primary source? o ABC News - America What was the author’s or creator’s position in society at the time the primary source was created? o Large well known news outlet of the time. When was the primary source created? o April 28 th , 1986 - The day that the accident was made public knowledge and could no longer be hidden. Where was the primary source created, released, or publicized? o ABC News – United States of America Who was the intended audience for the primary source? o The public as a whole. Why was the primary source created? o To inform the public of the nuclear accident in the Ukraine and the effects of the accident, such as how far it spread. ABC News also mentions in the video the use of the concrete we see around nuclear cores and refers to the Three Mile Island incident comparing to Chernobyl and how the Three Mile Island incident was more contained due to the concrete confinements. Whose perspective(s) is presented in the source? o The perspective of the news outlet – informative and does come off a little nonchalant due to the incident not being in the US. Also, comes across as reassuring since the news defines why the US nuclear plants have concrete confinements around them which is to help in preventing the spread of radioactive materials in the case of an accident or disaster such as Chernobyl. Both Sources Analyze the primary sources relevant to your historical event for the presence of bias. 2
• Both primary sources are from ABC News that is an American Based News Broadcasting agency. The first source has bias on how will this effect the states since, during this time, they are not sure if the materials in the travelling cloud will reach the US overtime. This broadcasting is also focusing on the graphite of the core, and also brings up an event in the UK 30 years prior to the Chernobyl event and asking “experts” why they were not prepared for this or know how to slow the leaking of radiation. The second source has the presence of bias since the news clip was ran in the United States. It was the day of the event and has great information, but in the video it also talks about the Three Mile Island event and is reassuring as to why the concrete containments are important, effectively reassuring citizens that the nuclear plants in the US are safer than Chernobyl was. Slight bias but informative on the event itself is solid. It explains the spread of the radioactive materials as in how far it went, and the levels that each affected area had that were above normal and how the disaster was found out. Compare how your historical event is represented in your primary sources. Chernobyl is represented as a disaster, a huge disaster, which it was. Both sources are extremely informational on the spread and the effects of the meltdown. Having something like the Three Mile Island incident, that was here in the US, to compare it to and having it known that the disaster was eons beyond that is really eye opening to the actual levels of the destruction caused by the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986. 3
