For my historical research project, I will be focusing on the Trail of Tears and the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Tens of thousands of Native peoples were forcefully removed from their land. During this trek of over 5,000 miles that the Native peoples were forced to walk, thousands lost their lives due to illness, weather, starvation, and abuse. Some tribes had treaties already in place that the Indian Removal
Act overrode. Some treaties such as the Treaty of New Echota were formed during this time. I would like to research some of the questions: Was any part of the treaties written during the Trail of Tears ever honored? What was the goal of the Indian Removal Act? Some of the search terms I have used in my research are Trail of Tears AND Indian Removal Act of 1830, Treaty of New Echota, Five Civilized Tribes, Trail of Tears AND treaties. One secondary source is “Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation” by John Ehle , Anchor 1989. An eBook version can be found at EBSCOhost, https://search-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.snhu.edu/login.aspx?

. This is relatable as the Treaty of New Echota was formed with the Cherokee Tribe and many have questioned the validity of the treaty. Another secondary source is an article written by Sara Ann McGill titled “Indian Removal & the Trail of Tears.” Indian Removal & the Trail of Tears, August 2017, 1–2. A copy of this article can be found at https://search-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.snhu.edu/login.aspx?

. This is a relevant source as the Indian Removal Act of 1930 is what led to the Trail of Tears. This act signed by Andrew Jackson was put into place to forcibly remove the Five Civilized Tribes from the Southern States to west of the Mississippi River into what was deemed “Indian Country”. What secondary sources (including the two you listed in the draft of your writing plan) do you plan to use in your historical analysis essay? Be specific, and list the name of each source, the author and publication, the date it was published, and where you found the source.
Thesis Statement
While there has been a long history of distrust in our government by Native Americans, it
is not without reason. While some may argue that the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was put into
place to help the economy of a growing country, others will say that the act that displaced and killed thousands of Native Americans came from a place of greed and power-hungry politicians. Sources
A very important primary source that I will use it the transcription of President Andrew Jackson’s
message to congress in regard to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This can be found at the National Archives and Records Administration. The citation would be as follows: Jackson, A. (n.d.). President Andrew Jackson's message to Congress 'on Indian removal' (1830). National Archives and Records Administration. Retrieved November 20, 2022, from https://www.archives.gov/milestone-
documents/jacksons-message-to-congress-on-indian-removal
.
Another valuable primary source would be the Treaty of New Echota. A copy of this treaty is found within the Cherokee Registry. The citation is Treaty of New Echota 1835. The Cherokee Registry. (n.d.). Retrieved November 20, 2022, from https://cherokeeregistry.com/treaty-of-new-echota-1835/

In addition, I can also use this secondary source written by Alfred A. Cave in 2003 entitled: ABUSE OF POWER: ANDREW JACKSON AND THE INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF 1830. A copy of this can be found at
https://doi.org/10.1111/j.0018-

. This is a viable secondary source as cave goes into depth about the misuse of the law as well as the violation of preexisting treaties that occurred with the enforcement of the Indian Removal Act. Audience and Message
In choosing the topic of the Trail of Tears, the audience would be more
Is my thesis statement too broad? Or is it too specific?
Is it clear what the topic of my essay is from my thesis statement?
Does my thesis outline my argument?
Does my thesis describe how I will prove my argument?
Draft an introduction for your historical event analysis. Keep in mind the necessary parts of an introduction: an explanation of the topic and argument, an overview of evidence, and your thesis
statement.
If you have revised your thesis statement, make sure to include the most recent version.
