EDUC 350 S CHOOL S AFETY / C RISIS M ANAGEMENT P LAN T EMPLATE STEP 1a: List 3 things you learned about a Crisis Management Plan. Cells will expand as you type. I did not know that Crisis Plans had it already within the plan to designate someone to tend to the media side of their affairs. I did not know that the Superintendent’s Office had so many sectors that need to move all at once or that Principals played a central part in the workings of a Crisis Plan that effected the entire Division. STEP 1b: List 2 things that surprised you about a Crisis Management Plan. Cells will expand as you type . I was surprised to learn that you do not immediately contact parents in the case of a fatal incident, rather verify it with and through the oulice for? I was also surprised to learn that Librarians were mentioned on the list of important personnel for implementing the Crisis Plan. STEP 2: Summarize your thoughts regarding what you learned and surprised you and tell the reader ‘Why’. Cells will expand as you type . (at least 100 words) I learned that there are multiple layers to a crisis plan that involve many moving pieces to work together and to stay aware of protocol for things to work. It is important that just like the Superintendent’s Office is fully aware and trained on their position to do the job so are those who are in the field. Also this Plan seemed to incorporate multiple parts of a crisis from keeping the image clean in the media to having the different types of interventions already. I was shocked to see just how thorough this plan is and how one plan covers multiple topics and is able to safeguard an entire district with minimum tweaks for individual campuses. STEP 3: Application. Reflect on your experience or what you would want to ensure in a school you would teach at. How would you apply this knowledge to your safety and student safety? What recommendations would you make to your school leadership? (at least 300 words) I would want to ensure that my school had a Crisis Plan that depply tended to the needs of my students and the Crisis they go through on the daily as much as the unforeseen circumstances that may occur. The plan from what I saw covered a lot of large Crisis that are happening within our schools today. I would also look to add more to my plan on how to deal with students and teachers who have severe Mental Illnesses and may have outburst that can potentially become dangerous to others. I feel adding a team designated to attending to those types of incidents we could see a shift in things such as suicides or students attacking other students or teachers. I worked at a school where the cops were called up quite a few times to restrain a student and the student began to become comfortable with the cops showing up, however you could see the trauma the students as well as the teacher was going through as they bore witness to these fits. And what do we do to tend to and prevent things like that that are happening more frequently in schools, especially elementary schools where security is not always as strenuous. I would also recommend to
EDUC 350 administration to have more intense and diverse crisis teams within school buildings to assist in avoiding certain types of crisis. Having someone on site to deescalate fights with parents, someone to deescalate situations in classrooms, someone to work with on site counselors and social workers to help catch things that could be potentially falling through the cracks at home. Having a team that understand the importance of checking the safety of the building for students. Simply spreading the awareness and creating a specific task force to monitor those things could potentially redirect the traction of some of the incidents that happen that can be stopped with early detection. Having someone even take time to explain the importance of various drills to students is important to boost student cooperation and awareness for not only themselves but others. Creating true community amongst the people, the teachers, and the students to help make a more alert and intune school environment throughout the city that can change the trajectory of so many things.
