Using specific examples drawn from the crash course video, International Commerce,
Snorkeling Camels, and the Indian Ocean Trade, what do you consider to be the major
economic developments associated with the Indian Ocean world?
-
In the video, we learn that the Indian Ocean trade was a vital trade network that
connected various regions, which helped facilitate trade and significant economic
developments. Spices and luxury goods played a big part in the economic developments
associated with the Indian Ocean world. The spice trade specifically played a significant
role in shaping the economy because they were highly sought after in Europe and the
Middle East. The Indian Ocean trade also facilitated cultural exchange and innovation.
This led to the spread of different ideas, religious beliefs, and languages. Specifically, the
Swahili language is a blend of Bantu and Arabic influences. The role of middlemen and
trading hubs played a critical role in the economic developments that occurred as well
because they acted as intermediaries between the participating regions and cultures. The
economic developments that occurred influenced urbanization and social structures in
different regions. Another key factor to consider is the importance of the voyagers using
monsoon winds to allow for efficient and reliable transportation for trade. Overall, there
were many economic developments associated with the Indian Ocean world and they
contributed to the emergence of Empires and States. Some rose to be powerful and in
control of key trade routes.

What are the similarities and differences in the themes illuminated in McNeill’s chapter
13 and the crash course video?
-
Many different themes relating to the Indian Ocean trade were illuminated in both the
crash course video and the textbook pages. After listening to the video and reading the
assigned textbook pages, the readers can find some similarities and differences in the
information provided. One similarity that is evident is the focus on monsoon winds being
an essential factor in the Indian Ocean trade. In fact, it is one of the first points mentioned
in both sets of learning material. They both explain how important it was for voyagers to
be knowledgeable of these winds to help aid the trip when crossing the ocean for trade.
Another similarity mentioned is the middlemen that were present. The voyagers had to
travel long distances, and often times, it was necessary to have trading hubs and
middlemen to shorten the length of the trip. One difference between the two sets of
learning materials that I found was that the textbook included information on the
population and health of those participating in the Indian Ocean trade. I think speaking
about the health of these populations is essential since there was such a widespread
amount of contact occurring with people of different cultures. It is also vital to discuss the
health benefits and detriments that occurred during this period.
