Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your
historical event.
In
44 Days
,
the narrative is very much driven by the passions and dramas that played out on the
streets of Tehran during the revolution. These photographs captured by Mr. Burnett give us an
intimate look at the goings on while they happened. Images of students, clerics, and working
class people alike suffering, celebrating, and fighting invoke feelings of a shared struggle.
In
The Iran Revolution and Its Influence on the Revival of Islam,
the narrative focuses on the
religious and cultural aspects of the Revolution covering themes such as Shi’ia Revivalism.
In
Death to the Shah,
the history of the Revolution is covered from the year 1953, when the
infamous US and UK backed coup took place installing the Shah in power, to the fateful year of
his ousting in 1979.
In one of his more iconic interviews during his career, Mike Wallace got to meet with the
Ayatollah Khomeini face to face and interview him on the Hostage Crisis that would set in
motion the growing animosity between the US and Iran for years to come. The narrative is
mainly US concerns over the treatment and release of the hostages and how the Revolution will
change Iran’s standing in world politics.
Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your
historical event.
I believe that the narrative that the Hostage Crisis plays has heavily influenced the contemporary
understanding of the revolution as a whole. The hostage crisis is where we see a spike in the
anti-America demonstrations in Iran, so naturally many Westerners may be hesitant to see the
revolution in a negative light.
Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question.
Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps
you better understand your historical event.
The narrative that the hostage crisis brings to the revolution really made me realize that the
United State’s actions in Iran along with our vast cultural differences really have created a
quagmire for US-Iranian relations going forward.
Please include your research question here (you will not be graded on this).
How did differences in culture influence the Revolution?
