Final Paper Preparation Worksheet This template will help you prepare for your final paper by organizing the information for your final paper, walking you through the process of defining your topic, researching, and analyzing primary and secondary sources, creating an annotated bibliography, and crafting a thesis. Once you have completed the worksheet submit it to the online classroom for grading. After your instructor has graded the worksheet, please be sure to use it and the feedback provided to you by your instructor as you construct your final paper . Please write in black or a contrasting font. 1. Identification of Subject: Identify the group that you selected in week 1 of the course. Your final paper will focus on this group and how this group has experienced American history. As a reminder, the groups were: African Americans Native Americans Women Immigrants Which topic have you chosen? For this assignment, I picked the Native Americans. 2. Events Choose FOUR specific events relating to your group that you plan to discuss in your final paper. The events should help you explain the changes that occurred for this group from 1877 to the present, including the challenges and achievements that are a part of that group’s history. Two events must be from the period between 1877 and 1945 Two events must be from the period 1945 to the present. At least one event from each period should focus on the political and/or civil rights of the chosen group. It is recommended that you consult the HIS 206 Timeline in selecting your events, especially for the period 1945- present, as those are covered in the last two weeks of the course. On this worksheet and in your final paper, be sure to discuss the events you have chosen in the order in which they happened. This will help you put together a project that makes historical sense. If you need help with finding events or sources, go to the HIS 206 Final Paper Support Page.
If you are having trouble completing this form or have questions, be sure to contact your instructor. For each event please state: 1. The name of the event 2. When it took place 3. Where in the US it occurred 4. Who was involved 5. What circumstances contributed to the event 6. How this event was historically significant Event 1 (1877 – 1945): Indian Citizenship Act (also called the Snyder Act of 1924) took place in 1924. This event was an Act passed by Congress, so it affected the whole United States. This act affected all united states citizens, primarily Native Americans, during this period. The act enabled Native Americans to be considered US citizens. The main factors contributing to this event were the United States' expansion and, previously, the Passage of the Homestead Act, which encouraged Western settlement. This event is historically significant because it shows the growth of the United States expansion and how the Native Americans were, in many instances, forced out of their land into reservations. It has shown slow progress in the United States' ability to treat all individuals equally. Also showing how they continue to want to spread their idea of there “American” beliefs and ideas, even it if takes someone to remove them from their land or strip them of their culture. This event is another act, which coincided everywhere within the United States as Congress passed it. This act aimed to consider and resolve issues made aware of by the Meriam Report. This fixed some problems, such as self-rule within the tribes. However, it did not encompass the vast amounts of various tribes. The act responded to what was found within the Meriam Report, which showed that Native Americans during this time within the tribes were full of poverty, suffering, and discontent individuals. This act was made to resolve these issues. However, it could have been more successful at completely resolving or handling the problem correctly. This event was historically significant because it again shows the growth of improvements within the Native Americans. This is like the previous act mentioned as it shows that the government is paying more attention to the Native Americans yet not to the extent of being equal or the government completely understanding the Native American culture. This Event took place in the year 1961. The NIYC was initially founded in the city of Gallup, New Mexico.

This affected primarily Native Americans not only throughout the country but also in the western hemisphere. The group was founded by many individuals who were dissatisfied with the National Congress of American Indians' apparent inaction. This event was historically significant as it shows the Native Americans' strength in standing up for their beliefs, culture, and way of life. This also shows how little the government has protected or made any improvements to the practice of life for Native Americans. This also shows the power and unity of the Native Americans, who are still willing to fight for what they believe is right despite all the previous hardships. This event took place in the year 1975. This occurred over the whole United States, as this event is another act passed by Congress, thereby affecting all its citizens. • The focus of this legislation was on Native Americans since it granted them more sovereignty over tribal territories and, more crucially, eligibility for federal services and programs on tribal grounds. The lack of autonomy over their tribal property and prior government assistance for its services and activities prompted the passage of this act. This event is noteworthy because it demonstrates Native Americans' development in America. Giving Native Americans more sovereignty over their tribal territories is critical to their survival. This now signifies that the government recognizes them and respects Native Americans more equally than previously. References:

The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 authorized tribes to create alliances with federal agencies to aid in the management of resources formerly managed by the federal government. This offered Native Americans greater control over services such as education and health care. APA Citation for Secondary Source 4: Provide the APA citation for your source. 4. Introduction and Thesis Statement Provide an introduction and thesis statement for your final paper. An introduction introduces your topic and approach. A thesis is a sentence length statement of the main idea of your paper. You can think of a thesis as the one sentence that you want the reader to take away from your paper. Your introduction and thesis statement should summarize the changes that occurred for your chosen group from 1877 to the present, including the challenges and achievements that are a part of that group’s history. A good introduction and thesis should be informed by the findings of your sources, and your analysis of your events. For more information about thesis statements, consult the University of Iowa’s Writing a Thesis webpage. Draft of Introduction and thesis: Over the course of time from 1877 to the present-day, Native Americans have slowly benefited from acts enacted which first limited their ability to enjoy the benefits of being a full U.S citizen.
