Brigitte Escartin Short Essay Responses 1) There were a number of things that contributed to the Spanish-American war which included the Cuban struggle for their independence and also the sinking of the sinking of the USS Maine on 15 th February 1898. Fighting first began in the Philippines on 1 May 1898. Some other factors that were also involved in the Spanish Americans were the U.S. desire for expansion and Imperialism. Regardless of that event, the U.S. motivation for starting a war with Spain was its desire for the expansion of its territories. 2) The Treaty of Versailles punished Germany by holding them accountable for starting the war and causing the terrible losses that were associated with the war. The way in which Germany was held accountable was through penalties on the Germans. Some of these penalties included the loss of German Territory, having to pay for massive reparations and also having to demilitarize their military. Long Essay The United States moved away from its initial ideals of isolation during the period of Imperialism. During this period the United States sort to expand its territory. During this period the United States annexed Hawaii, had significant control of Cuba, and claimed Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The Presidents that were in support of the U.S. During the period of Imperialism first began with President McKinley who had essentially set the sage by going to War with Spain and also the
acquisition of overseas territories. Subsequently, the next three U.S. presidents adopted the same position in terms of their Foreign Policy. The presidents that followed the Munroe doctrine and also followed the initial foreign policies of McKinley were, Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson. Their policies included intervening abroad controlling access to foreign resources and promoting democracy. Much of the interventionist policies that were being implemented by the United States were enshrined in the Munroe Doctrine which was a policy that warns European nations that the United States would not allow colonization. The more aggressive policy during the period of Imperialism was established by President McKinley who went to war with Spain. The three main points of the Munroe Doctrine were that there needed to be different spheres of influence between Europe and America and additionally, cautioned imperial European countries against interfering in the affairs of the newly independent Latin American states or potential United States territories.
