Claim: Watergate relates to national security because it prompted people to not trust the government as much so people were more skeptical when it came to politics. Evidence: On June 17,1972, five men were caught breaking into the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate complex in order to take sensitive campaign information which they were ordered to do by president Nixon’s advisors. President Nixon had taped all the conversations that took place in the Oval office and in the end it revealed that he was aware of the plan and his attempts to cover up the scandal. While facing possible impeachment and the scrutiny of everyone surrounding him, president Nixon resigns. Reasoning: This betrayal by President Nixon led the public to withdraw support for him as new information had come out about his involvement. It also led to more security measures when it comes to confidential documents. Lastly, it caused the public to have distrust when it came to the government and whether or not things were being covered up and kept from the public.
