Hannah Gourlay History 1301 Fall 2023 Final Exam 1. The merchants kept the British away at the harbor because that was the only way they could get in. Planes were not used at this time. The reason they wanted them to stay away is because of their independence. The merchants did not want to be ruled by the British anymore and wanted to show their dominance and independence. Another reason why it happened was due to how major the trade value was at that time. Merchants would get most of their money from trading goods with other countries and people. The sinking of ships and valuables put a toll on the economy everywhere. I think that is another reason it would not happen today. The reliance of the global supply chain is a business. It needs to run. In today's time, businesses are too valuable to take such a risk like that. I do not think that this would happen in today's society. I think that the evolution of technology and warfare would play a major role in what would happen today. I believe that it would be more of a war instead of more of a smaller sized attack. What happened was more impacted on the economic side of things rather than the people of either land. 2. An event that was gone over in class that really stuck out to me was the Lost Colony of Roanoke. The reason being is that it is a mystery. I love the fact of not knowing a certain answer, it gives a feeling of you doing something important when researching and learning about what happened in the past. I also liked that topic because it was like a puzzle to me. I love to try and connect the dots to things and make it make sense to myself. I find a sense of enjoyment from educating myself more upon research. Trying to see other people's perspective on historic events and researching another point of view brings me enjoyment and enlightenment. Another point of view in this class that we could have seen through would definitely be the British point of view. I am also so curious to see how the British see and feel about historical events that have happened between the colonies and the United Kingdom.
