A brief summary of the source: The main point of this article focuses on how student affairs professionals can help students at community colleges stay on track to graduation or transfer to four-year institutions through guided pathways. This article also discusses how student affairs professionals encounter different issues that hinder them from successfully helping their students. Such as web-based program information needing to be improved, NSO (new student orientation and advising needing to be more focused on helping new students orient to campus and register for first-term courses, and conventional onboarding practices needing to consider the intricate learning process.
In conclusion of the article, the authors state that there are better methods than the standard/conventional approach to onboarding new students at community colleges. However, adopting the guided pathway approach can help with the onboarding process by assisting student affairs professionals in creating more coherent experiences for their students so that they can explore more relevant career fields. A brief summary of the source: The main point of this article is to inform individuals of how effective orientation programs can offer a sense of community at the institutions they call home, as well as how it positively affects retention and graduation rates, especially in four-year institutions of higher learning. Incorporating NSO (new student orientations) often plays a critical role in how students feel in unfamiliar territory. It also discusses the different types of programs that can be included in NSO so that everyone can experience it similarly—for example, in-
person NSO, online NSO, and a combination of both. In concluding the article, the authors discuss their study of 65 NSOs randomly selected from 572 four-year institutions in the United States. Their study found that NSO was offered in many different formats, in-person, online, or both. However, even though those formats were given, most colleges relied on a more traditional in-person format. Just like everything we encounter in higher education, many of those colleges ran into challenges, and those challenges were: time, funding, and staffing. A brief summary of the source: This article discusses the pressures of student success and assessing student learning regarding student completion outcomes at community colleges. One way in which this could happen, as stated in the article, is to make NSO (new student orientation) mandatory.
This article also touches base on how assessing co-curricular opportunities in student affairs programs and functions can also help. As one reads the article, one can see the Page 2 of 7

emphasis placed on how important it is to implement mandatory orientations at the community college level by sharing their study done at a community college in Colorado. After concluding their study, the authors studied their results and found that NSO implementation of mandatory attendance was a significant key to those students' success. For example, they were allowed to effectively plan and assess the programs of interest in which they wanted to pursue, become familiarized with academic requirements and expectations, learn about the services provided to them on campus, and aids to help them become successful.

A brief summary of the source: The main idea of this article is to provide its readers with an overview of new student orientation (NSO) and new student e-orientation (NSEO). The author conducted a study at 100 random community colleges in the United States. Within the article, one can see the systematic approach the author took to review and analyze both programs. In concluding the article, the study provides the reader with results that are not surprising at all. Even though both programs were offered, most of the community colleges
studied still offered in-person NSOs. Another effect of this study can benefit student affairs
professionals, especially those in the administration that were evaluating and assessing NSOs and NSEOs. Again, it has its pros and cons, and one of the biggest cons is that the community college system faces evolving challenges, especially with changes in technology, diverse student populations, financial constraints, and other issues that play a Page 3 of 7

A brief summary of the source: The main point of this article is the effectiveness of an online orientation program and how it correlates to student success at community colleges. However, the researcher completed a quantitative analysis on the difference in grade point average and retention as a form of success among students who completed an NSEO versus those who did not complete the NSEO.
In concluding the research, the articles state a difference in fall-to-spring retention and first-semester GPA for those who completed the NSEO compared to a student who accessed but did not complete the NSEO module. In return for the strong criticism against NSEO, this article and the study showed that overall, students who completed the online new student orientation earned a higher first semester GPA and were retained.

A brief summary of the source: One of the main points of this article is understanding the student who attends community colleges. The environment in which community colleges attract is often diverse, and they are usually located in dynamic places. As one already knows, the population of community colleges continues to increase, and the economic resources Page 4 of 7

needed to help those colleges function are shrinking. So, this article invites student affairs professionals to find ways to make planning and implement new student orientations without having to take on the challenges that many four-year institutions face.
The authors conducted a study at Oklahoma City Community College. As a result of their research, a committee of student services staff and a host of faculty members were charged with forming plans to revise their current new student orientation. As a committee,
the members took three significant steps. Those steps included research on best practices for NSO, current institutional methods analyzing, resources, staffing, and alternative formats discussed. After implementing the new program structure, Oklahoma City Community College students increased their GPAs and were retained.

A brief summary of the source: The main idea of this article is to inform its readers that academic advising plays a significant role at any college, but mainly in community colleges. Academic advising attends to each of the core elements of each student's ability to become successful based on
the ending progression, such as transfer or career interest, and one's ability to attain their goals. In concluding the article, the readers will find how effective academic advising is when it comes to the success of students, and implementing the use of academic advising in NSO
will allow the students to feel a sense of community and the urge to want to be a part of Page 5 of 7

Student Orientation Can Be Vital to Persistence and Retention

A brief summary of the source: The main idea of this article is that new student orientation is critical to retention. According to the research within the article, when students feel connected to the college, they are more likely to be retained and graduate on time. However, those that do not attend
NSO do not have that connection, and those students are the individuals that are not retained because they do not have that connection to the college. When concluding the article, the reader should understand that orientation is to engage
students with essential individuals within student affairs so that they obtain answers to their questions and have them addressed early, typically before they even start college.

A brief summary of the source: This article's main point is how new student orientation plays a crucial component in one's success in college. The reason stated in this article is that when colleges/universities switch their mindset from orientation to fostering campus connections, increased student engagement is connected to retention. The author conducted a study among five colleges and universities, and as part of the ending results, they found that NSO had been linked to college enjoyment and higher grades. Of those students who attend NSO, 17% reported having an overall positive life Page 6 of 7

professionalism-a-discussion-following-the-shift-to-online-new-student-orientation/
Annotation:
A brief summary of the source: This article discusses the shift from in-person NSO to online NSO. This shift had become more popular since 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed how people operated. Its focus is on how to improve NSEO so that those students receive the same quality of guidance as those that come to an in-person NSO regarding professionalism. Based on the author's conclusion, work still needs to be completed so that someone's capacity for professionalism is visible. As one may its, professionalism has an abstract concept, and physical performance plays a significant role when students, staff, and faculty communicate. NSEOs take away that level of professionalism for several students and hinder them when it comes to online engagements.
