HIST-170 Name: Kiet Hoang Date: 07/19/2023 Professor: Brent Rudmann Reconstruction DBQ Doc 1: 1. Summarize the 14th Amendment (what does it protect, and for whom?) This Amendment protects the citizens of the United States and the state in which they live, and for those who were born or naturalized in the United States. No state shall make or execute any legislation that abridges the rights or immunities of the citizens of the US; it protects people’s freedom such as life, liberty, or property without proper due process of law because states cannot violate those. As well as shall any state refuse the equal protection of the laws to any citizens within the scope of its authority. Doc 2: 2. Based on this document, describe one way the Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans. According to this document, one method the Ku Klux Klan frightened African Americans was by violent activities such as robbing, whipping, ravishing, and murdering them without provocation or explanation. The Ku Klux Klan activities were referred to as "spreading terror wherever they went," implying a broad campaign of threats and physical assault against African Americans.
3. According to this document, how did the actions of the Ku Klux Klan affect African Americans’ participation in the political process? Based from the document, the Ku Klux Klan's efforts had a significant impact on African Americans' engagement in the political process. According to the petition, African Americans were forcibly removed from their houses and denied the opportunity to vote. Many people were denied the right to vote by methods such as slaughter and violence. It also states that African American people were not granted the chance to testify in courts. Doc 3: 4. Describe some of the basic limitations placed on African-Americans after the Civil War was over by town governments. Following the Civil War, town governments imposed basic restrictions on African- Americans people, for instance, they were not allowed to enter town without consent from their employers, or the right to rent or keep houses or any kind of property in town, they were also banned with gatherings in public, and prohibited from carrying firearms or any kind of weapons without a permit or license. 5. What was probably the purpose of these rules? I believe that the main purpose of these laws were most likely to hold African- Americans people under the scope of authority of affluent landowners and preventing them from exercising their right to vote and taking part or getting involved in politics or any political process.
Doc 5: 6. Based upon the diagram below, how did share-cropping work? Did it provide a method for farmers to make a profit from their work as free farmers? The way of Share-cropping works resulted in the landowner providing the sharecropper with land and seed in return for a half share of the crop. After sharing their harvests and paying their dues, the sharecroppers hardly had any money left and were forced to take on further debt to cover for basic needs. This structure made it impossible for farmers to benefit from their labor and efforts as free farmers. Doc 6: 7. Document 6 involves a picture taken 90 years after the Civil War had ended and 80 years after Reconstruction was over. Based upon this image, was either the Civil War or Reconstruction (or the political process afterwards) successful in obtaining equal rights for African Americans? No, I believe that the posts that separates the public fountain into 'white' and 'colored' parts does not demonstrate positive progress toward equal rights for African Americans in this picture. The picture suggests that African Americans people were not given equal access to public amenities during this time period. Showing that unfairness and inequalities are still ongoing during that time.
