EDUC 360 Discussion Question #2 After reading and watching this week’s content on Integrating Faith and Teaching, I would have to say the content that challenged my worldview on teaching the most was our text book Philosophical, Ideological and Theoretical Perspectives on Education by Gerald L. Gutek. I learned so many perspectives on education in chapter 2 on idealism and education, specifically from Plato’s Phaedo. Plato’s Phaedo is based on a conversation that Phaedo had with Socrates before he died. One of the perspectives in the chapter that has stayed with me spiritually and that challenged by thinking is the argument about education between Socrates and the Sophists. The Sophists believed and relied on persuasion to convince students they can teach the truth and that people believe what you want them to believe. Whereas Socrates believed “education has an overall very general purpose: It is to lead individuals to the truth so that they can enjoy intellectually, and morally excellent lives and that education is foremost intellectual in that it develops the minds power to search for the truth (Gutek, 2013). As I read, I couldn’t help but think about how the world never really changes and how history is always repeating itself. It is clear that The Sophists way of teaching and learning isn’t as helpful or fulfilling as what Socrates believed yet how many people sided with The Sophists. In today’s worldview, there are so many choices and options a person can choose but the path has already been shown to us and lit up so brightly by God yet so many think there is a better way. Even within schools teachers are still choosing to teach children in one way instead of exploring the options that would work best for the student of the class. As I observe and substitute in classrooms I am consistently seeing the lack of regard for teaching the needs of divers students and I cannot help but think… “These teachers need to integrate faith into their teaching and lessons and pray for them as a teacher and their students”. Though I feel disappointment in their performances at times, I am uplifted and comforted by the knowledge that I will be able to seek and honor God among the students, teachers, parents and schools that I will teach in one day. I know there are limits to what we can say as educators regarding religion in school, but it doesn’t not stop me from practicing my personal worship and faith. References: Gutek, G. L. (2013).
