Hi, Jillian The discussion thread that you started is really good, in my opinion. It has undergone thorough
examination and thought. It was, I believe, challenging for Mehmet Ali to adapt because of his
dependency on support from Europe. In its quest for modernization, Egypt used a tactic known as
defensive developmentalism.

Believing that lending money would help developing countries, they took
on excessive debt that ultimately caused them to fail. Egypt's problems, sadly, did not stop there. A
financial crisis led to the Urabi Revolt, which in turn resulted in the British annexation of Egypt in 1882.
Despite its inability to pay back the debts to the European nations, Egypt utilized the money to build
railroads, factories, and the Suez Canal. Defense developmentalism was a big problem since it made
Egypt more and more reliant on Britain and other European countries. Britain got involved in internal
political issues in Egypt as a result of the country's dire debt troubles. I'm looking forward to seeing your
next discussion posts going forward in the course.
