EDUC5410 Child Development Unit 4 Portfolio Activity University of the People May 06, 2023 In Unit 4, we looked at the stages of development and how they relate to learning, assessed the fundamentals of child development and how they relate to theories of childhood development at various ages, and applied Kolb's Model to consider the stages of development for Infancy and Early Childhood. For the purpose of this Portfolio Activity, I will use Kolb's Model of Reflection and reflect on this week’s topics and relate it to instruction and learning using the points below to better guide me: Concrete Experience: “what I did” section In this section, I will describe the circumstances and activity that I engaged in. For this week s written assignment, I examined the many stages of development (physical, cognitive, social, and moral) and their repercussions for education at each age level using my own domain chart, placing special emphasis on their relation to learning. The significance of the developmental period to students' learning processes and the consequences for educational practices in those areas was also stressed. I also included information from the theories of as many of the key developmental theorists as was appropriate. As part of the discussion assignment for this week, I read through the Principles of Child Development and Learning and Implications That Inform Practice. I then chose two of the principles and developed explanations by considering what each principle means to you as an educator. I also wrote an opinion piece explaining why I believe each is crucial for the growth and education of children. Reflective Observations: “what I wonder” section In this section, I'll point out a particular aspect of the event that was especially relevant to me and discuss why it was significant and worth thinking about. I found that two of the principles of child development were particularly important to me as I was learning about them. They are; Principle 1: Development and learning are dynamic processes that reflect the complex interplay between a child’s biological characteristics and the environment, each shaping the other as well as future patterns of growth. (Principles of child development and learning and implications that inform practice, n.d.). I believe that this principle is important to the areas of child development and education because if kids get attention, love and care from family, friends, and other members of the community, and then educators provide high-quality early childhood education, then they can deal with challenging situations. This principle will also aid educators and others understand the feelings of children and get deeper understanding of their needs and wants (Principles of child development and learning and implications that inform practice, n.d.).
Principle 2: All domains of child development physical development, cognitive development, social and emotional development, and linguistic development (including bilingual or multilingual development), as well as approaches to learning are important; each domain both supports and is supported by the others. (Principles of child development and learning and implications that inform practice, n.d.). I believe that this principle is important to the areas of child development and education because, kids are better prepared for more difficult academic material and learning experiences when cognitive, emotional, social, interpersonal, and self-regulation abilities are included into their education. In a nutshell, the knowledge foundation demonstrates the value of an all- encompassing curriculum and the interdependence of the developmental domains for the success and wellbeing of all young children (Principles of child development and learning and implications that inform practice, n.d.). Abstract Conceptual ization: “what I learned”/”so what” section In this section, I will draw connections, consider the experience's relevance, and compare it to what I already know and understand. I'll also talk about what I went through and how it affected me. As an educator, I have learned from the Principle 1 of Child Development that I have to emphasize on providing consistent, responsive, sensitive care and quality instruction to my pupils. I don’t have to let my pupils to go through chronic stress and other unpleasant events; their resilience and healthy development are significantly influenced by the quality of early childhood education. Kids have different intrinsic personalities, and some of them are more vulnerable than others to the positive and negative effects of environmental influences and so I will often encourage parents and guardians to show kindness and have enduring relationships their wards. Additionally, I learned from the Principle 2 of Child Development that we should let pupils to explore new things and practice, as this would enable them to hat kids adapt multiple languages shortly, and doing so, there are many cognitive benefits associated with that (Castro et al., 2019). I don’t speak every language in community, but I cherish and promote the preservation of all languages. The relationship between social, emotional, executive function, and cognitive abilities, as well as the significance of movement and physical activity is increasingly being shown in research. These learning domains all reinforce one another and are essential for training young children from birth to age eight. In the elementary or primary education, cognitive learning may have come to take a back seat to other developmental processes, such as physical, social, emotional, and linguistic growth.
Application “now what” section In this section, I will identify the implications of what you have learned for future experiences and discuss how I anticipate applying the knowledge that I have gained to new experiences. As an educator, I have always observed that if kids have burdens to think about, it causes them to be stressed all the time, which may have a negative effect on brain development and they can’t cope with academic works. In order to avoid poor performance of my pupils, I will apply the principles of Child Development to understand how to address their difficulties in learning.
