“Physical literacy is the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the
healthy development of the whole person” (SHAPE America, n.d., p.1). According to the Aspen Institute, it is vital that young people are familiar with physical literacy, movement, and activity. Physical literacy programs are offered by various institutions, both private and public sector, and seek to
provide movement skills and motivation to be active for life (Aspen Institute, 2016). It is critical to give people a foundation of knowledge, motivation & habits built while young, as it has been proven to lead to more active and healthy adults. 2a. For a group of 4
th
graders, I’d create a relay type of activity. I’d say we
have 3 groups comprised of 5 students each. The activity would consist of 2 minutes of warm-ups, such as jumping, stretching, and skipping, while explaining what we are doing and how it benefits us. The main portion would be 6 minutes of running short distances, throwing softballs to one another, catching a softball to one another, and kicking a dodgeball to the next person. The final 2 minutes would consist of a cool-down and debrief of how we feel and what we liked about the short relay.
2b. Pertaining to the five components of fitness, the warm-up and cool-
down would cover flexibility
and establishing mind-body exercise
, allowing them to make the connection as to what the goals of each of these
activities are. The relay portion would cover aerobic exercise
and muscular fitness
, as they will be sprinting/running, and using their muscles and dexterity to throw, catch and kick. Their speed, power, agility, and endurance would be improved over time through activities like
this. The proposed design of this program would aid in developing physical literacy and mitigating intervention points listed in the graph we reviewed (Aspen Institute, 2016).
