Report
Professor and class, In January of 2020, the lives of every American citizen drastically changed when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerted our nation of an outbreak, escalating quickly, leading to public health emergency, and a nationwide shutdown. A widespread of unemployment, closure of businesses, and deaths of loved ones only adds to stress levels and an increase in various mental health concerns due to isolation. Gerber et al. (2020) found a national expansion has occurred from necessity for telehealth visits due to the pandemic, still ensuring a continuity of care with safe and cooperative interactions between professional and client (Abstract). Also discovered by Gerber et al. (2020) was the capability of telehealth offering support and connectivity for survivors of trauma while also enhancing resilience between patients and their clinicians (para.24). Allowing a counselor into your home does have numerous advantages, such as using distress tolerance and self-regulating tools in a familiar environment, service animal available when a nerve is struck, or even access to their fidget items should their anxiety begin to rise. Trauma-informed care available online does allow access to mental health care more efficient, convenient, and affordable. There are also more methods available via telehealth as well, i.e. EMDR has the capability of being offered anywhere there is an internet connection, space, and privacy. The revolution of healthcare online availability has the potential to continue its expansion with more effort put forth and money invested in better technology. According to Henry (2023), approximately 25% of clients are currently using telehealth, exceeding the 5% prior to the pandemic, with an aim of 70% in the next five years but at a more gradual pace with usability improving. The healthcare field will continue to witness steps toward aggregated, all- in-one technology, management of chronic disease making strides, regulations and government funding will continue, and more capital will flow to innovators who are a part of the digital health care field. Dr. Eyal Zimlichman, the chief innovator and transformer at Sheba Medical Center in Israel, stated, “The nation’s health care system will experience an evolutuiion-not a revolution- of telehealth” (Henry, 2023, para.5).
