Finding time to collaborate with the general education teacher can be
challenging for special education teachers. How can you as a special
education teacher support the general education teacher with lesson
planning and class instruction for special education students who are in
an inclusive classroom? Why is it important for you to be a part of
lesson planning and instructional strategies?
Collaborating with the general education teacher is a very important part of
student learning in an inclusive classroom. Special education students may
not learn like other students and may need certain accommodations and
modifications. It is the job of the special education teacher to make sure
that the student gets those things. “Sharing expertise stimulates
productivity and growth as colleagues collaborate and consult with peers in
their areas of special abilities.” (Knackendoffel, A., Dettmer, P., & Thurston,
L. P., 2017)
It is very important for the special education teacher and the general
education teacher to work together in a co-taught inclusive environment. The
special education teacher is the expert on the students with disabilities and
their expertise can come in handy when creating lesson plans and activities
for the students to complete. Oftentimes, as a special education teacher, I
make sure that my special education students are doing the same thing as
the regular education students. I just modify it a bit. That can mean many
different things. I might modify how many problems the student needs to
complete or I might modify the way that a student completes the
assignment all together. For example, instead of writing down answers I may
have the student answer verbally or instead of doing 10 math problems they
will have to do 5. It all depends on the disability and what that student
needs.
