Lab 4: Muscular Fitness
1. Provide some specific examples of circumstances when the indirect 1-RM would be more
appropriate to use than the direct 1-RM.
The indirect 1-RM would be more appropriate to use than the direct 1-RM where the person has
less experience with muscular strength exercise. A submaximal prediction is utilized to
anticipate the maximum weight that may be lifted at once in an indirect measure of RM. A
person who does not lift often may not have the proper form to perform due to lack of
experience. It will be difficult for the person to achieve the most exact 1 RM. For someone who
has a history of injuries is another situation in which the indirect 1-RM may be used. A person
with a history of multiple injuries may sustain catastrophic harm because the direct method
necessitates heavy lifting. Therefore, an indirect 1-RM is appropriate since it is a safer option to
get results.
2. Provide some specific examples of circumstances when the handgrip strength assessment
would be more appropriate to use than 1-RM testing to assess strength.
The handgrip strength assessment would be more appropriate to use than 1-RM testing to assess
strength when a person may not be able to raise a maximum amount of weight. Therefore, the
muscles in their hands and arms are used to measure their strength. They apply pressure to the
isometric dynamometer, which shows the accurate strength. In physical therapy, they can
determine a patient's strength, capabilities, and if the patient gained or lost strength more
efficiently than with 1-RM testing. The test is coming from the arm and hand strength. Also,
effective for elderly people who are unable to lift large objects to prevent injuries.
3. If a female can perform traditional "male" push-ups, why must she still do the modified/
"'female" push-up for fitness assessments?
The reason a female must perform a modified push-up for fitness assessments is because the
female personal best strength will not be measured effectively if they perform the standard male
push-up. The female may finish the traditional push-ups less compared to the modified push-ups.
Therefore, the female must perform the modified push-up for fitness evaluations to get the best
accurate results of strength. In comparison, the males may be able to perform more modified
push-ups than standard push-ups compared to females because of the upper strength difference,
but will determine accurate strength measures.
4. If your 1-RM is high (Strength), will your push-ups (Endurance) also be high?
Furthermore, if someone strength trains, will their push-up score improve? Provide a clear
rationale and support each of your answers beyond simple yes or no responses.
If my 1-RM is high, my push-ups will not be determined to be high. The muscular endurance
focuses on the aerobic system, and muscular strength focuses on the anaerobic system. If
someone strength trains, they may not improve their push-up score because the person must
strength train both aerobic and anaerobic in order to improve their push-ups. Therefore, training
in strength and endurance or performing 20 pushups every day will see an increase in their
pushup score every month by adding more pushups.
5. When is it appropriate to use the absolute weight that a person lifts for their 1-RM and
when is it appropriate to evaluate 1-RM scores relative to a person's body mass?
It is appropriate to use the absolute weight that a person lifts for their 1-RM when observing the
change of their musculoskeletal fitness. Then the appropriate measure to evaluate 1-RM scores
relative to their body mass is when analyzing individuals based on data.
