HIT 220 Case Study 10 ACO, IG, and strategic planning
1. ACO’s are a group of providers and suppliers that work together to coordinate care for Medicare
patients. Some of the characteristics include:
Promoting patient-centered care
Increased care coordination
Using big data analytics
Promoting evidence-based medicine
Promoting patient engagement
Reporting on quality and cost measures
2. Relationship of information governance to ACOs:
Information governance (IG) helps manage and control information throughout its lifecycle in an
accountable care organization. IG improves quality of care and patient safety, population health, as well
as increases efficiency and effectiveness. In the meantime, reduces costs and risks.
3. I would include the following stakeholders on the IG team/ council:
Head of Information Technology Department
Head of Information Security Department
Medical Records Manger/Supervisor
Head of the Legal Department
Head of the Administration office
4.
As HIM Director, one of the goals of including IG and ACO in department’s strategic plan would be to
have a process to ensure that all data complies with state, federal laws, regulations and standards, as
well as abide by proper retention policies of the previously mentioned laws, standards and regulations.
Also, my goal would be to put specific safeguards in place to secure data and information from improper
use and unauthorized disclosure.
5. Patient registries in accountable care organizations can provide a powerful insight into patient quality
of care, help with coordination of care, as well as support quality improvement. Registries have the
ability to focus on specific populations and can be used for tracking and identifying gaps in patient care
and to measure patient outcomes. Therefore, registries can be a powerful tool to support ACOs.
