Home Health Simulation: Part B
Objective:
Collaborate with the inter-professional healthcare team to design, coordinate, and
evaluate individualized family centered care among vulnerable populations.
Instructions:
Answer each question in complete sentences (a minimum of 2-3 sentences each)
after completing the home health safety simulation.
1.
What did you notice FIRST when you walked into the suite?
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the unsupervised children in different
rooms. The kid in the shower caught my attention immediately. The messiness was what also got
my attention. With messes and unsupervised children can create a big hazard and be harmful to
the child.
2.
Regarding the chart of identified safety/environmental concerns from Home Health Part
A, select what you believe are the top 5 safety/environmental concerns. List those 5
concerns and explain how you would address each one.
a.
Safety Concern 1: Open electrical wires and burnt outlets. I would ask if there is
still power to these wires and outlets and see if they could cut power to them until
the problem can be fixed
b.
Safety Concern 2: Gun being hidden behind the couch. I would recommend them
learn about the importance of gun safety.
c.
Safety Concern 3: Open pill containers. This is can easily be accessed by children
in the house which is a huge concern to address about keeping medications out of
child’s reach.
d.
Safety Concern 4: Burning stove with oil. I would address this by turning the stove
off and cleaning up and warn them of the hazards this causes and proper
precautions.
e.
Safety Concern 5: Kid in the shower alone. I would address this by assessing the
child to make sure they were okay and then teach the parents the importance of
never leaving a child unsupervised and how they could have potentially drowned.
3.
Was it difficult to navigate around the home? Explain your answer.
It was not difficult to navigate around the house. It did get a little more challenging
because you could easily miss a small problem that is still a safety concern. There was a lot going
on so you really had to pay attention to everything and double check to see if you looked over
something.
4.
Based on what you assessed would you recommend any assistive devices or therapy
services?
A sharps container for needles to be placed in. I would recommend giving them education
on the importance of not smoking with oxygen and around children. I would also address the
dirtiness of the house and have someone come out and manage the bug situation if possible.
5.
In a real-life situation would you correct identified safety/environmental concerns as you
saw them or would you address everything at the end of your visit? Explain your answer.
In real-life I think I would correct the concerns I had as I saw them. Going from room to
room to address everything at the end would probably cause me to look over something. Starting
out in one room and addressing my concerns as I seen them in the room would help me make
sure I have identified everything that needed to be addressed. At the end I would probably do one
last walkthrough to double check if I missed anything.
6.
Include a minimum of 3 resources or referrals you would recommend based off of your
assessment of the environment?
I would first recommend them to the SNAP program. This is a food assistance program
for those who may not have access to obtaining the nutrition needed. I would recommend them to
the Family Assistance Program to help with overdue bills. I would recommend them to consider a
Traffic Pest Solutions to kill the bugs living in their home. They offer free pest control for low
income families and persons.
