I-LEARNED CHART
Things I learned about Medical Conditions
1. This week’s reading assignment:
Something that impacted my
learning/understanding
“Medical conditions can be a cause of
disability because of heredity conditions;
the age of the parents; external
environmental conditions; and in utero
environmental conditions, such as viruses,
the use of antibiotics, or the maternal
ingestion of toxins (e.g., in the form of
certain medications or alcohol).”
2. Searching the internet: Something I learned
from a website
https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/developmentaldisabilities/facts.html
“Developmental disabilities are a group of
conditions due to an impairment in physical,
learning, language, or behavior areas. These
conditions begin during the developmental
period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and
usually last throughout a person’s lifetime”
3. My own experiences, observations, or
ideas
I believe that certain medications while
pregnant can definitely be the cause of a
disability. I often wonder what medications
I should or shouldn’t take during
pregnancy. My sister actually experienced
this first-hand. She’d taken some medicine
during pregnancy that doctors said may or
may not have had an effect of her baby in
utero.
4. Ideas or knowledge of another person:
Rae (2020) states that f
or students with the most
severe intellectual and physical disabilities,
medical conditions can account for changes in
behavior. For this reason, medical
considerations, especially for students who are
nonverbal or lack self-advocacy skills, must be
the first consideration. Ignoring medical history
or the possibility of a new condition can result in
a failure to impart best practices in medical care
(pg. 92).
