Diefenderfer Week 11 Discussion An issue in the news that is current in my state that I researched this week is the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 that includes a new financial incentive for states that have not expanded Medicaid (Kansas Health Institute, 2022). The American Rescue Plan will lower or eliminate health insurance premiums for millions of lower- and middle-income families enrolled in health insurance marketplaces. This will help well over a million uninsured Americans gain coverage. A family of four making $90,000 could see their monthly premium come down by $200 per month. The American Rescue Plan provides a 100% federal continuation health coverage (COBRA) subsidy through September 1, ensuring that those who lose their jobs or lose their health care due to reduced hours don’t lose their health care. (The White House, 2021). In Kansas right now, legislature is working on the KanCare Expansion project. This relates to the trend of access to care and health coverage for all individuals which we learned about across the past few weeks. This program will allow more low-wage Kansans to qualify for health coverage. Kansas is one of 12 states nationwide that has not expanded its Medicaid program, leaving thousands of residents with no affordable health insurance options. (KHA, 2022). The development of this expansion may mean multiple things for my work in healthcare administration. First, more of my dialysis patients will be able to qualify for transportation benefits which will allow them to attend their life-saving dialysis treatments three times a week. Secondly, this will allow our company to accept more patients that were previously uninsured which allows the patients more access to care.
