Assignment 11 on Cultural Awareness ‘’Person said as someone who works in a large hospital within a diverse population, I’ve learned to be accepting of cultures and beliefs regardless if they align with my own. I’ve also learned that culture and religion play a major role in many families. These changed therefore can alter the outcome of treatment and healthcare plans. It is our job to educate the families in possible outcomes but ultimately respect their decisions. Fortunately, I have met healthcare providers who are understanding of different cultures and believes systems and they have been respectful. As an atheist young-adult I experienced some healthcare providers who would offer to pray for me or say comments like ‘’God bless you’’ I understand however than rather than a negative verbiage; it’s their way of connecting with me as they are religious and are simply wishing me well. Cultural competencies include being aware of your own biases and how these biases affect the way you interact or provide care to others as well as understanding relevant cultural differences that arise in your health care system to address these differences with better care. patient experience and health outcomes. Cultural competency should begin at the beginning of the health meeting. For example, a practical solution is to use a script or form to help registrars identify patients who need more clarification about how the process works or how much they expect to be billed. To prepare people. More than ever healthcare professionals and all
those who support them in the field must work to break down barriers to care. They should not receive poor care for conditions or circumstances beyond their control that can be addressed to ensure better outcomes. One way that many organizations are trying to meet the needs of many patients is by focusing on cultural competency.
