What are the myths commonly held about adults who were maltreated as children?

The myths about adults who were mistreated range from different social and
cultural aspects. Childhood maltreatment has no long-term impact is one myth
because this tries to downplay the trauma that the adult had to deal with. All
maltreatment individuals are violent or abusive themselves, they should “just get
over”, and it only happens in certain cultural groups are some more common
myths. They all try to dismiss the fact that the fact that they had to deal with
trauma, and it will affect them later on in life.

What might cause former victims to disclose their abusive childhoods during adulthood?

A few things would be therapy, seeking validation, empowerment, building trust,
educating, healing, and protecting others will cause someone to disclose their
abuse because it can help bring awareness and allow others who have
experiences to know that they aren’t alone.

Why do the victims of neglect and abuse in childhood have difficulty trusting?

They have difficulty with trusting others because they don’t want to feel betrayed
again, they don’t want to feel vulnerable, they might have low self-esteem, and
they could fear rejection.

How might anger result from particular kinds of maltreatment? How might it be
expressed?

Physical abuse would cause the individual to be defensive and have aggressive
behavior. Emotional abuse will cause passive-aggressive behavior and
withdrawal. Neglect can cause the individual to feel abandoned, become self-
destructive, and begin to rebel. Lastly, sexual abuse can cause the individual to
feel shameful and they will show many signs of behavior from other abuse.

What is meant by verbal inaccessibility? Why is it a problem?

This generally means the individual will have difficulty and the inability to
communicate effectively. This can cause communication disorders,
neurodevelopment conditions, mental health conditions, impacts on
relationships, educational challenges, and social isolation.
