A.1. Experience In The BSHIM Program
Reflecting on my experience with WGU's Health Information Management (HIM) program and my professional practice experience (PPE), they have proven educational and inspirational. I am confident and feel well-equipped to pursue HIM job opportunities that will continue to enhance my knowledge of healthcare compliance, data governance, and information systems. Before entering the WGU BSHIM program, I had a generalized understanding of the HIM professional’s responsibilities and how the HIM field worked. At the time of my enrollment into this HIM program, I had been working as a certified medical assistant for the past eighteen years. I knew I wanted to change my career path to allow me to pursue higher-paying job opportunities. Before enrolling in the HIM program, my perception of the HIM profession was that it was a technical healthcare role instead of a clinical role, which is what I was ready to change about my current job role. As I began to learn different aspects of the HIM field, my perspectives of it became enhanced and changed as I completed the program. After learning about integrating technology
with healthcare, I understood how big data and technologies like machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) lead revolutionary transformations in healthcare decision-making, analysis, and data management processes. My experience with the HIM program at WGU was positive overall. If I had to choose one improvement, it would be to improve the PPE II internship approval and placement process.
The PPE II course is one of the last in the program. I believe it would benefit HIM students, to have a greater understanding of what will be considered their responsibility concerning the immunization requirements and the compliance and approval process of the PPE site for
3
completing that course. I would suggest more detailed discussions of what that particular course in the program entails at the beginning of each term leading up to it and at the time of enrollment to ensure that each HIM student fully grasps the more involved contributions they will be responsible for. Knowing that WGU does not have pre-approved PPE sites, the student should be very well informed of how that process works so that they can prepare and plan for the timing of the immunizations and site approval processes. Failure to understand the complexities of the PPE II course process could result in the student's frustration and add an unnecessary term to their degree plan. My experience academically has been generally great overall as I feel I've had two awesomely supportive mentors and very informative instructors throughout my HIM degree plan and courses. One area of HIM that has captured my interest is Data Analytics. I see myself pursuing opportunities to learn more about data extraction and mining. This could comprise unstructured data from research publications, clinical notes, and other patient-generated sources, as well as structured data from healthcare databases, claims data, and electronic health records (EHRs). A.2. Critical Thinking And Decision Making Experience
Throughout my HIM academic journey, I've had to use critical decision-making and critical thinking. In my Healthcare Project Management course, I was responsible for creating a process improvement project plan to implement EHRs from a hybrid record system, and critical thinking was required. I chose an agile method approach for that project to conduct and complete the implementation plan. Decision-making was needed as I had to create the Gantt

chart to present the start/end dates, significant milestones, task sequencing, and task dependencies along the project's critical path.
A.2.A. Apply Your Experience
I envision applying my educational project management experience to future HIM field projects. That experience has provided me with the skills I need to create project schedules, resource plans, and project planning and also include defining my project's scope, goals, and objectives. This experience will allow me opportunities to plan and execute healthcare initiatives expertly, which will ensure that projects are organized, well-defined, and correctly resourced. B. Contribute To HIM Field
I plan to contribute to the health information management (HIM) field by joining the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) organization. In doing so, I will maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare information technology while allowing me to network with other HIM professionals. After acquiring much experience, I plan to one day become an AHIMA mentor to current and aspiring HIM professionals. As technology evolves, we
must do our part to ensure new HIM professionals are informed of the past, present, and future
aspects of HIM. I also plan to contribute to health information management by conducting research projects and publishing on relevant topics. My focused research areas will be data analytics, privacy, health informatics, security, and process improvement in HIM. Participating and sharing
5
my findings and insights through presentations or publications at healthcare conferences will establish my expertise in the HIM field and could contribute to the advancements of HIM knowledge. B.1. Personal Values And Ethical Principles As I consider the many aspects of my future career, I plan on incorporating principles and values to uphold my beliefs in the AHIMA. The first personal value that I plan to include is dependability. I plan to take on leadership roles within HIM organizations to influence policy, contribute to industry advancements, and advocate for HIM best practices. This includes serving on committees, boards, or task groups focused on HIM-related initiatives. Also, I would like to mentor other HIM professionals and be a reliable figure who helps them advance their education in the ever-evolving field of HIM. The second personal value that I will incorporate is determination. I am determined to commit myself to others. I have proved throughout the years that I am determined to reach my goals. I had goals of getting my associate’s and bachelor’s degrees when I decided to return to school. As of today, I have completed my associate’s degree and am one course away from completing my bachelor’s degree in HIM. I will implement the same level of determination to help my healthcare team analyze and implement process improvement plans, provide the best care to our patients, and generally succeed. I work hard to make sure my set goals are met. One general ethical principle I plan to incorporate into my future career is responsibility. As an HIM leader, I must be willing to take responsibility for maintaining high-quality standards, mistakes, and identify improvement plans for our HIM department. I will struggle to lead a
6
successful team if I am unwilling to uphold the ethical principle of responsibility. Managing a department without respect for its leader will be a challenging, if not impossible, task. I have learned that when something goes wrong, it is best to hold myself and my team responsible so that we can work together to resolve it.
B.1.A. Challenges My two personal values were dependability and determination, while my ethical principle was responsibility. As I make every effort to maintain my values, there will be specific expected challenges that I will address if they occur. Managing my commitment to dependability to others could be hindered by conflicts in scheduling. If there is a conflict with my schedule that would result in postponed engagements, other sessions, and events may need
to be delayed. I’ll hold myself responsible for maintaining my dependability as a leader and will do my best to show up and set an excellent example for the rest of my team. As I begin my HIM career, procrastination and feeling overwhelmed could be potential challenges for me with determination. I am a people pleaser; sometimes, I take on more than I should. Even though I typically thrive under pressure, if I take on too much professionally or personally, it could affect my personal value of determination. I will work on reforming my procrastination tendencies so as not to feel overwhelmed. I will be responsible for setting obtainable goals and working one step at a time toward completing projects with my team to succeed and maintain determination. B.1.B. Strategies

Communicating effectively is one strategy that I will use to support my values and ethics.
I need to communicate with my team about the timelines and expectations of a project. Open communication between a team and its leader is essential for quality teamwork and produces better results. I believe I can uphold all three of my values and ethics by communicating effectively. Setting team goals is the second strategy I will use to support my values and ethics. Involving our employees in goal-setting will help develop a sense of responsibility, dependability, and determination within our team, organization, and HIM field. The HIM department typically works closely with other departments. So, setting goals and working through them together will help increase the probability of a project’s success. B.2. Principles From The AHIMA Code Of Ethics
As an HIM professional, there are three specific principles from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) code of ethics that I plan to uphold. They are included in the following: 1.
Recruit and mentor students, peers, and colleagues to develop and strengthen the professional workplace.[ CITATION AHI191 \l 1033 ]
I will uphold my commitment to others by participating in HIM industry initiatives
and associations. I will continue to push the HIM industry trends and innovations forward by mentoring upcoming HIM professionals.
2.
Refuse to participate in or conceal unethical practices or procedures and report such practices.[ CITATION AHI191 \l 1033 ]
8
I will uphold ethical practices and integrity by avoiding conflicts of interest, promoting transparency in my work, and accurately and objectively documenting
and coding patient information. I will take it upon myself to report any unethical practices I encounter. 3.
Represent the profession to the public in a positive manner.[ CITATION AHI191 \l 1033 ]
I will uphold and exhibit professionalism by maintaining the highest standards of practice, staying informed about emerging trends and advancements in the industry, and seeking opportunities amongst the public for professional development and education. B.3. Ethical Dilemma
As an HIM professional, I recognize that there are numerous ways to navigate potential ethical dilemmas related to the HIM field. One of AHIMA's Code of Ethics principles is to preserve, protect, and secure personal health information. Under this principle, it is understood that HIM professionals should only access patient's medical records based on their necessity and job role. For example, Rosie is an HIM employee in the HIM department. Rosie decides to access the medical records of neighbors, family members, and friends. As an HIM professional, I know that Rosie's actions violate HIPAA and are inappropriate. Rosie is my co-worker, and I know she did not need to access those medical records out of any job-related necessity. Rosie was accessing these medical records out of curiosity and because she thought her access as an
9
employee was not being monitored. As I am also an HIM professional, I understand Rosie's violations, and I would immediately report them to my superior. My superior would then investigate and report the violations to the compliance department, and eventually, this would lead to some degree of disciplinary action concerning Rosie, including her possible termination. Although initially, I may not feel comfortable reporting Rosie's actions, I know as an HIM professional, I am bound to abide by the code of ethics. If I were the superior HIM, I would bring
Rosie in and go through disciplinary action. I would then contact our compliance department and report the situation to them. For Rosie, reeducation and retraining would be required if she returned to her position. I would also recommend implementing a three-month trial period of restricted access for Rosie while closely monitoring her activities. As a HIM professional, I must abide by AHIMA's established code of ethics by maintaining professionalism and protecting health information. C.1.A. Current Skills
Two skills that I currently have and will contribute to my professional growth in Health Information Management (HIM) are my leadership and analytical skills.
Leadership skills involve effectively communicating with team members, motivating them, delegating strategically, actively listening, and having flexibility. If you do not possess good leadership skills, trying to manage a team will be stressful and can negatively affect workflows and outcomes. Through my educational development, leadership skills will be used to help build team relationships and effectively complete team tasks. Learning and demonstrating practical interpersonal and communication skills through leadership as a student

will greatly benefit me as I enter the HIM field. Mastering leadership and collaboration skills will be pivotal to achieving my HIM goals academically and professionally. [ CITATION DeV22 \l 1033 ]
Analytical skills are considered soft skills that enable individuals to identify and solve complex problems. Components of analytical skills are critical thinking, research, and analysis. In
the HIM field, it is crucial to conduct research and observe to identify problems, make decisions,
and find solutions. Whether I am participating in an assignment or a project setting, it will be imperative that I identify issues and come up with solutions to achieve my goals. [ CITATION Lin231 \l 1033 ]
C.1.A.l. Future Educational And Professional Development Endeavors
As an HIM professional, having analytical skills will help me to effectively determine the best way to share information and patient data with other healthcare providers. For example, as
a coder, I would utilize these skills to determine the proper coding structure for medical procedures or diagnoses. As an HIM leader, I would apply my analytical skills to evaluate the current process within my department and make informed decisions about necessary improvements. In educational terms, I would use my analytical skills to determine which academic path best suits me to accomplish my goals. For example, I would analyze and decide the pros and cons of obtaining my RHIA certification. Additionally, my analytical skills would greatly benefit me when determining what further credentialing is necessary to obtain and qualify for the higher-level position I want, such as an HIM director or vice president. When I participate in
11
team projects, I will rely on my analytical skills to contribute practical solutions to the issues we encounter. My goals in my professional and educational endeavors are to make my team and myself successful. Additionally, I would use my leadership skills to help advance my career. Pursuing and obtaining my bachelor's degree will help me broaden my abilities in management and leadership. I can streamline processes and optimize productivity by effectively managing my HIM team. For example, overseeing the coding department as an HIM director, I will use my analytical and leadership skills to examine current processes, implement improvements, and effectively communicate these changes to my team. Without these skills, my coding team would
lack set expectations and could fail to meet the productivity standards. Concerning my educational endeavors, possessing leadership skills will enable me to communicate in team projects effectively, take initiative in tasks, and motivate my team and myself. As I plan to pursue and obtain my master's degree, I recognize that both leadership and analytical skills will be essential to successfully achieving my goals in this endeavor. C.1.B. Additional Skills
Two additional skill sets that I want to develop are in the areas of medical coding skills and technical skills. I intend to improve my medical coding skills because medical coding plays a significant role in healthcare and HIM. I have previous knowledge of medical coding, but it is basic, and I would like to build on my current understanding. Enhancing my medical coding skills
will involve efficiently multitasking, improving problem-solving skills, and learning adaptability. Staying up-to-date on coding changes and the new coding guidelines rolled out twice a year will
12
enable me to understand the latest coding guidelines better. It will allow me to help make my organization's revenue cycle more effective.
I would also like to develop my technical skills since performing most HIM functions requires technical skills. It is vitally important for an HIM professional to have the right level of technological expertise, given the growing implementation of EHRs, coding databases, patient portals, and upgrades to EHR systems. Developing technical skills also includes a comprehensive
understanding of HIPAA laws and their impact on collecting and storing patient data within our systems. C.1.B.I. Future Educational And Professional Development Endeavors
My medical coding skills are the first skill set I would like to develop and improve. My goal is to become an HIM director, and I need to improve my knowledge of the policies, processes, and guidelines to become a better leader in the coding department. Even though coding was not initially of interest, I know expanding my knowledge in this area will add to my development and growth as a skilled leader in the HIM department. Understanding the complexities of the coder's methods, responsibilities, and the impact of their work on our coding department and organization will be instrumental to my HIM job role. Furthermore, one of my goals is to obtain a coding credential that will help open up job opportunities for me, such as the AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Enhancing my medical coding skills will also help me perform Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) audits, billing, coding, and reimbursements. Also, coding enriches critical thinking, creativity,

13
and problem-solving skills, which all help to add value to my abilities as an HIM leader.
[ CITATION Wil23 \l 1033 ]
My technical skills are the second skill set I would like to develop and improve. This will enable me to confidently navigate our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system independently. Obtaining a deeper understanding of the EHR system will allow me the knowledge to resolve any EHR-related issues myself without needing the assistance of the IT team. As an HIM professional, proficiency in our hardware and software systems is crucial for me to master, as it provides me with the skills needed to address issues, problem-solve, and conduct audits on the team's performance.
Concerning my educational endeavors, technical skills will give me the confidence to perform tasks to the best of my ability and help me work more efficiently. I have plans to undertake the RHIA exam and then pursue a master's degree. I must rely on and use my technical skills to study effectively for the RHIA exam and complete my master's degree program. C.1.C. SMART Goals
To further develop my medical coding skills, I have set a SMART goal that will help to expand my knowledge and overall skill set in this domain. I aspire to broaden my capabilities by actively enhancing my understanding of medical coding, ensuring I excel in this critical HIM practice area. I have also established a SMART goal to enhance my technical skills to effectively enable me to resolve fundamental issues by focusing on the IT side of our EHR system. I aim to improve
14
my knowledge and proficiency in the EHR system and acquire a deeper understanding of the system to ensure that I can provide timely solutions and resolve fundamental issues. C.1.C.I. I will strive to improve and enhance my understanding of the IT side of our EHR system to address and resolve fundamental issues effectively.
Specific: My goal is to learn and acquire the IT skills necessary to become more proficient in troubleshooting and resolving IT issues with our EHR system as they arise. Possibly even becoming an EHR application specialist.
Measurable: I will enroll in and complete the required IT training, demonstrating my readiness to address and handle general EHR problems. By taking on additional IT responsibilities, I will be able to show my competence by independently resolving IT issues and help to reduce the need to rely on the IT department for assistance constantly.
Achievable: I believe I possess the skills essential for achieving this goal. I am well
equipped to excel in this endeavor, with a firm grasp of technology, motivation, and determination. I hope to serve as the primary resource for resolving issues within my department and ultimately become a more effective HIM leader.
Relevant:
As I progress in my HIM career, I will prioritize continuing to learn and embrace new challenges. I will strive to enhance my leadership abilities and expand my skill sets. My professional and educational development plans are both aligned with this goal.
15
Time-Bound: I will commit to a three-month training program with the IT department to accomplish my goal. This training will be comprehensive and cover topics including projects of the EHR system and background processes. This
training will conclude in a final certification designating me as my department's EHR application specialist. I believe the deadline for this training to complete is a standard and realistic timeframe. I am aware of other professionals completing a program within the same timeframe.
I will strive to improve and enhance my overall knowledge and skill set regarding medical
coding.
Specific: My goal is to obtain my additional CCS coding credential and supervise a
medical coding team.
Measurable: I will enroll in a three-month CCS training program to be able to sit for my CCS coding credential through AHIMA. Once I complete this course and credentialling, I will utilize this credential to code inpatient and outpatient medical records
Achievable: Even though I have a basic understanding of medical coding, I am eager to learn and experience more. Someday, becoming an HIM director and supervising a medical coding team is what motivates me to complete this goal. I very much believe that the best leaders are aware of the responsibilities of everyone that they oversee and help them when necessary.

The Contingency plan: I will repeat the medical coding training course and sit for the final exam again if needed.
If I do not pass the CCS exam on my first attempt, I will need to take additional AHIMA training courses and attempt to pass the CCS coding credential exam once more.
18
C.3. Further Your Education In the near future, I plan to sit for my RHIA and then obtain my CCS credential, and I may
also get my Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). Eventually, I plan to further my education by enrolling in a master's degree program. I am still debating on what master's degree program will be best to pursue. Still, at the moment, I am thinking of either a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Education (MEd). Both master's degrees offer great opportunities and benefits; it will just come down to which direction I want to take my degree. The master's degree in business administration will prepare me to pursue senior management roles in various organizations, and the master’s degree in education will prepare me to pursue a teaching career. (AHIMA, 2012)

domains. In both of these domains, I found myself taking more time to re-read the questions and I didn’t feel as confident in my answers. As I continue preparing and practicing for the RHIA exam, I will focus on these two domains to ensure that I know what the questions are asking and will answer each question to the best of my ability. Before taking my RHIA exam, I will ensure that my confidence levels and comprehensive knowledge of the material in each of the five domains are at their highest. C.4.A.ll.
My first step in preparation for the RHIA exam will be to take several practice tests and possibly enroll in an RHIA exam prep course. An online RHIA test preparation course is offered through AHIMA; it divides each domain into five courses and covers all domains. The AHIMA RHIA online course also offers practice tests to expose you to the content you must be proficient
in to pass the exam. I will take and re-take practice exams until I feel confident and comfortable with what knowledge is expected of me regarding the RHIA exam. [ CITATION AHI232 \l 1033 ]
My second step in preparation for the RHIA exam is to make a test prep study plan. I will outline RHIA exam domain subjects and competencies expected to be evaluated. I will then review my course materials, study them, and fine-tune my comprehensive understanding of each domain information. My goal is to take and pass my RHIA exam on the first attempt within three months of graduating from WGU. After that, I will move on to obtaining my master's degree. I feel confident that I have developed a great two-step RHIA exam plan to ensure I am adequately prepared to pass the exam on my first attempt.
