October 28 Chapter 8: Letter 1 I’ve been feeling like a bad mom lately. My son keeps on having accidents. He falls out of trees, and he crashes his bicycle. He also tried to eat a Tide pod. Why are all these accidents happening all of a sudden? Is this common, or is it just me? How can I prevent accidents like this? First of all, it sucks that you and your son are going through this tough experience. It is very common for accidents to happen in early childhood. Falling is one of the common accidents children experience (Berger, 2021). For example sometimes when they fall, they scrap their knees and elbows. This is because sometimes kids are curious and want to know or find out everything on their own. An example of this would be falling out of trees because they are curious about what is going to happen if they do. Also, it is important to keep in mind that these kids' prefrontal cortexes haven’t fully developed yet hence why some children act or behave the way they do. In most cases, children become impulsive and as a result, act on impulse in everything they do (Berger, 2021). I would suggest that you keep a close eye on your soon because he wants to experience everything at this point in his life. This demonstrates how he is still developing. It is nothing to worry about because as he gets older, he will discover what is unsafe and what he should and shouldn't do. Chapter 8: Letter 4 My daughter is three, and she is such a picky eater. She doesn’t seem to eat a lot, so I’m concerned that she isn’t eating enough. She is getting taller, but she’s much thinner than she used to be. I’m worried she’s getting too small. Is there a reason that she’s becoming so thin? Should I have her eat more food? I don’t think you should be worried more about whether she is eating enough but rather be happy that she is at least eating something. Picky eating is very common so do not feel bad just continue to make sure your child is getting the nutrients that she needs in order to survive. It is also important to know that children tend to decrease their food intake as their growth slows down. So she might be going through the same experience. It could also be that your child is feeling pressure to eat, not hungry, or feel she has no say in what she should and shouldn’t eat. So communication is key here. Talk to your child and find out why they don’t like a certain food. Ask her what she would like if she doesn’t like what is being provided to eat to make her feel included in choosing what she should eat (Berger, 2021). There are many things that can cause your child to become thin. However, if
they're going through a long time of picky eating, it's possible that they're just burning off more calories than they consume every day (Berger, 2021). Nonetheless, these stages do pass. But if you are worried about your child getting thin then talk to her pediatrician so that they can find a solution for her like giving her supplements to boost her weight if that is what she needs.
