Ernest Mungong Unit I Journal We are about to work through Godish, Davis, and Fu's (2014) textbook related to air quality. As such, we are going to be discussing engineering principles related to how we can engineer air quality as a means of controlling air quality. Consequently, we must first consider what constitutes air pollution. What do you believe qualifies as air pollution? Why? Air Pollution is a concern to air quality, and the risk is so severe that many talks and sadness spread about air pollution. Much need to be done in taking actions by some developed countries like the USA and Canada to improve air quality. The exposure to air pollution is alarming, and the consequence of this with families suffering from premature death and illness. After living in India, China, and Saudi Arabia, which have the worst air quality in the world, I can confirm that Canada and the USA have the best air quality. Every country must be committed to fighting climate change and supporting clean economic growth. Air pollution is a health hazard, and it constitutes many types of pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, NO2, SO2, and CO. These pollutants affect mostly children, the elderly, and patients with lung and heart disease. These groups or people are the most sensitive groups that may experience more severe effects. The changes in how we live have to change the air we breathe, which can be very polluted with many pollutants that we cannot imagine how the quality of indoor and outdoor air can be. An inadequate fresh air supply due to poor ventilation system maintenance will lead to poor indoor air quality. Air quality can affect us in different ways, including toxins through our airways, poor weather and environmental condition, especially in filthy neighbourhoods and apartments due to non-compliance with building codes. When living conditions are poor, wildlife turns to hang around for food. Molds are also part of the natural environment. The location of a building can have implications for indoor pollutants. Highways and industrial buildings may also be a source of particulates and other pollutants in nearby buildings. Climate change is another factor that can cause poor outdoor air quality, which can cause many health risks, such as asthma, nasal congestion, nausea, allergy and respiratory disease. Our schools are one environment where there is unsatisfactory indoor air quality due to poor ventilation, which impacts indoor air quality. Variations in
temperatures and humidity levels can cause unsatisfactory air quality. There are other causative agents like asbestos, inorganic dust, lead, pollen, water vapor and tobacco smoke components, and cleaning chemicals and building product is also an agent of poor air quality. Besides the above factors, industrial activities can cause the air quality to be poor if proper ventilations are not utilized. Toxic substances can be released into the atmosphere, and this can also cause poor outdoor air quality regardless of the environment outside. The use of When outdoor air quality becomes highly polluted, it can cause significant health issues and even death in some cases. For this reason, I firmly believe the issues discussed above trigger poor indoor and outdoor air quality. I currently reside in Alberta, Canada.
