Identify Question: Chapter 15 – Question 16: Probiotics, foods, and supplements that contain microorganisms are thought to cure problems of the digestive tract by restoring the natural balance of its microbial community. Sales of these products total billions of dollars a year. Explore the topic of probiotics and evaluate the scientific evidence for their beneficial effects. A good starting point is the website of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency that regulates advertising claims of dietary supplements. Question: Probiotics, foods, and supplements containing microorganisms that are thought to cure digestive tract problems bring in billions of dollars each year; however, many consumers may not be aware of the scientific evidence that backs the benefits of probiotics. Response: Probiotics contain a variety of microorganisms and bacteria that can have positive benefits when consumed or applied to the body. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, research has shown probiotics can help to maintain or restore a healthy balance of microorganisms in one’s body and influence the body’s immune response. These microorganisms and bacteria can help to digest food, produce vitamins, and destroy disease-causing cells. Because different probiotics contain different strains, it can be hard to pinpoint which probiotics are helpful and which are not; however, studies have shown that probiotics may be helpful in preventing antibiotic and cancer treatment-associated diarrhea, symptoms of IBS, necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis in premature infants, periodontal disease, ulcerative colitis, and more. Reference: “ Different types of probiotics may have different effects... A great deal of research has been done on probiotics, but much remains to be learned about whether they’re helpful and safe for various health conditions... However, in most instances, we still don’t know which probiotics are helpful and which are not. We also don’t know how much of the probiotic people would have to take or who would be most likely to benefit. Even for the conditions that have been studied the most, researchers are still working toward finding the answers to these questions.” https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/probiotics-what-you-need-to-know#:~:text=Depending%20on %20a%20probiotic%20product's,approval%20before%20they%20are%20marketed . Conclusion: As someone who uses probiotics daily, I can testify to the digestive health benefits that they provide for my body; however, I recognize that each body is different and what works for one may not for another. While there is existing research on the benefits of probiotics, there is still much more to be done regarding the strains and which probiotics are helpful for which concerns. Answer the question posed and put it into the following form: (Label each section: Question #, Question, Response, Reference, Conclusion)
