Questions to ask a HIM Profession.
1)
How long have you been in the field and why did you get into the field? Mr. Anderson stated that he started off in the nursing field but unfortunately, he was unable to continue the courses. In 2014 he entered the field as a Billing Specialist II with experience and was recently promoted to Patient Financial Services in December of 2022.

How do you stay informed and kept up to date about changes and new development in the field? Mr. Anderson stated that having open communication with your team and directors is essential. Email updates from directors or authorized personnel, verbal communication, and attending meetings and training.

What is most important about working with patient records? My Anderson stated that confidentiality is one of the top 5 importance of working with patient records. A patient’s information regarding health should not be disclosed or discussed without the patient's consent. For example: Mr. Anderson is sitting in with one patient and a physician or nurse comes in and begins speaking with Mr. Anderson regarding a different patient's health records. This would be a HIPAA violation and a breach of patient information.

What challenges do you face on a day-to-day basis? Mr. Anderson stated that having to deal with patients being upset about a bill or a patient being upset about having to pay the bill. Most patients don’t receive full information regarding what services and procedures are fully covered by their insurance. An itemized bill can be requested by the
patient to see the list of services and the amount. Mr. Anderson suggested that receiving payment before the procedure makes the role easier.

What credentials are needed for this role? Mr. Anderson stated that in most places some jobs will hire you based on experience. There are classes to obtain your certificate but, if you plan to make a difference and add value to what we do in the overall HIM field then gaining credentials such as the RHIT credential, CCS credential, and or CCP credential will be a great investment in knowledge.

Do you practice self-care? If so, how, and when? Mr. Anderson stated that he does indeed practice self-care. He mentioned that he used to take his work home and it became too much for him and his family. He practices self-care by taking Mental Days. These Mental Days are scheduled off days and vacation days without work. He uses this time to focus on his family and mental and physical wellness.
