Case Study Case #1
1.- What are some reasons why Arnold likely did not understand what Dr. Lopez told him?
I think Arnold probably didn't understand Dr. Lopez because he was given so much information about his diagnosis. I believe that upon receiving not-very-pleasant news about his health, Arnold was in a state of shock. It is essential to explain to the patient thoroughly what is happening and not use too many medical terms so that he can process it. Although the doctor was
doing his job, it's good to make a diagnosis using a little empathy and make sure Arnold understood his Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis.
2. What could Dr. Lopez have done to better present the information in a way that Arnold would understand?
I think the best way for Dr. Lopez to better present the information to Arnold was to explain to him about diabetes and not send him off to read a page to get more information. I think that Arnold needed to obtain the most explicit information from his doctor and thus be able to clarify his doubts.
3. Was it a good idea for Dr. Lopez to refer Arnold to his practice’s website for more information? Why or why not?
I think it's a good idea as long as Arnold first receives information from his doctor and eases his doubts. It never hurts to learn more about a diagnosis and how to improve your health, but always have precise information first from your doctor.
Case # 2
1.
Is Jean’s explanation of health literacy accurate? Why or why not?
I don't think Jeans' explanation of health literacy was accurate because, by definition, health literacy is the ability to acquire, understand, and use the information necessary to make health-
related decisions.
2.
Do you agree that Dr. Falk and Dr. Keller should address the issue of health literacy in their practice? Why or why not?
I think it is essential that doctors address the issue of health literacy. This will help older adults understand more about everything that happens to them and avoid doubt.
3.
What are some resources that Dr. Falk and Dr. Keller can use to improve the level of health literacy at their practice?
I think that one of the resources that doctors can use would be government funds for courses and workshops that help in the literacy of medical attention.
