HSCI 4300 Introduction to Health Care Management Reading
Chapters 4-6 Questions
January 17, 2024
1. Is organizational behavior in health care different from other industries, or is it just
more prominent? Explain.
-
Organizational behavior is a broad area of management that examines how people act in
organizations. It is concerned with creating working conditions that foster employee
effectiveness and organizational productivity. Health care organizational behavior does
not create unique management issues so much as certain issues are more prevalent in
health care (Shortell & Kaluzny, 2000).
2. Describe the automatic (System 1) thinking mode. Describe the deliberate (System 2)
thinking mode.
-
The automatic system 1 is fast, unconscious, effortless, reactive, sees patterns, and uses
intuition and heuristics; it involves both innate and learned skills.
-
The deliberate system 2 is slow, analytical, conscious, controlled, effortful, and uses
reasoning. It’s considered to be lazy and does not challenge automatic thinking patterns.
-
Both modes jointly run our thought processes, directing what we perceive and pay
attention to, and how we make decisions (Kahneman, 2011).
3. When marketing-savvy medical practices divide the total market into groups that have
relatively similar health care needs, what are they implementing?
-
Dividing the total market into groups based on healthcare needs is known as market
segmentation. It is a strategy implemented within health insurance and medical care
practice, with examples in the US healthcare sector such as employer-based insurance
groups and Health Maintenance Organizations.
4. According to the American Marketing Association definition of marketing, what should
marketing activities focus on?
-
Marketing activities should focus on creating, delivering, and sustaining long term value
to a distinct set of customers. They center on building a sustainable value-driven
exchange.
5. Television advertisements recruiting patients for liver transplants is an example of what
type of marketing tactic?
-
This type of marketing tactic would be considered a mass market strategy. It is a
traditional promotional tactic as television and newspapers still comprise the largest
portion of hospital advertising budgets.
6. What does a mass market strategy mean?
-
A mass market strategy means that the organization designs a product and markets to the
broadest group of buyers. If other companies compete, seeking customers may require
intense marketing.
7. What is cause-related marketing?
-
Cause-related marketing is TOMS shoes, where every purchase of a pair of shoes leads to
a one-for-one donation to a shoeless person from around the world. It links a for-profit
company and its offerings to a societal issue, with the purpose of building brand equity
and increasing profits.
8. When should the marketing plan be written in relation to the organization’s strategic
plan?
9. What are the five types of biases and their meaning?
10. What is the strategic planning process?
11. How can the focus on patient-centric care affect an organization’s care delivery?
12. What is the importance of strategy tactical plans and what questions do they answer?
13. What is a SWOT analysis, and why is the model considered to provide a thorough
picture of an organization’s operating environment?
14. Explain the difference between a mission and vision statement.
-
A mission statement is an organization’s enduring statement of purpose. It aims to
identify what the organization does, whom it serves, and how it does it. The vision
statement strives to identify a specific future state of the organization, typically an
inspiring goal for many years down the road.
15. How can innovations in technology and big data have a positive influence in health care
delivery?
-
Innovations in technology may reduce the need for other types of clinical staff in health
care. In the case of some surgical innovations such as minimally invasive surgery, robotic
technologies, and drug advancements, they may increase the requirement of financial
resources or new electronic health record systems. As care becomes more personalized
and participatory, technology such as nanotechnology and “wearables” will also impact
care delivery.
16. What are the potential ethical concerns surrounding the marketing of baby formula?
-
