Demographics
The entirety of Sentinel City with a total population of 663,862, is composed of four smaller neighborhoods which are Nightingale Square with a population of 103,974, Acer Tech Center which has 168,390, Casper Park District with 352,643 and Industrial Heights with a population of 38,855. The different ages of the persons that make up Sentinel City are 10.5% over the age of 65, 21.7% under the age of 21, and 7.4% under the age of 5. Another breakdown of the community demographics must include one by race. Race percentages are as follows: white alone is 80.6%, Black/African American alone is 10.4%, American Indian/Alaska Native alone is 2.0%, Asian alone is 3.7%, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone are 0.2%, Hispanic or Latino make up 31.5%, White alone, not Hispanic or Latino makes up 52.7%, and 2 or more races are 3.1%. The city's median household income is $49,091, with 18.9% of individuals living below the poverty level. The median income of Industrial Heights is $24,642, Casper Park District is $80,134, Acer Tech Center is $166,300, and Nightingale Square is at the top at $269,550. Conversely, the percentage of non-insured residents in Nightingale Square is only 0.7%, Acer Tech Center slightly higher at 1.5%, followed by Casper Park District at 22.7%,
and leading the uninsured neighborhoods is Industrial Heights at 37.5%. The demographics of an
area are important to understand because they can help show how things like available resources (or lack thereof), economic status, race, income, and insurance can affect the lives of the people within the community (Sentinel U., 2021).
Neighborhood Safety Assessment
As I took my bus ride through the neighborhoods of Sentinel City it became evident that each neighborhood's finances and resources affected its safety level. For example, in Industrial Heights, the poorest neighborhood, there was an increased homeless population, drug use, buildings in various states of disrepair with graffiti, pollution complaints from smoke coming from nearby factories, and one area of town to another was physically blocked off by concrete blockades. There were also pests and molds, along with stray animals and trash on the streets and sidewalks. The church and soup kitchen are also located in this district, a benefit for its population, but still in a dangerous area as there is a closed building right next door with more graffiti and abandoned vehicles nearby. As the bus made its way into the Casper Park District, there were fewer dilapidated buildings and more active places of business, but still some graffiti and crime at some of those places of business with visible trash and stray cats running around. Acer Tech Center was better yet with more useable outdoor space and only a few areas of trash or graffiti. Nightingale Square, the most financially well-off neighborhood, has more of a thriving community presence with hardly any damaged buildings, trash, or other safety hazards (Sentinel U., 2021).
Records from the Sentinel City Healthcare System indicate that there is a drug problem. Those records include tobacco use at 24%, alcohol at 36%, marijuana use at 12%, cocaine at 5%,
heroin at 7%, methamphetamines at 10%, and prescription drug abuse at 18% (Sentinel U., 2021).
Based on times provided by City Hall, EMS Response times are as follows: Fire – 6.33 minutes, EMS – 7.46 minutes, ALS – 7.54 minutes. Officer Charles Cruz states, “it’s typically 10-15 minutes” for police (Sentinel U., 2021).

Crime is still a problem in Sentinel City, although some neighborhoods are worse than others. The most common crimes in the entire city are bicycle theft, property damage, shoplifting, and drunk and disorderly conduct. Out of a perfect, no crime score of 100, Industrial
Heights comes in at the worst crime rate with a safety rate of only 42/100, followed by Casper Park at 57, then Acer Technical District at 89, and Nightingale Square comes in the safest at 93/100. City Hall shows the most common arrest charges in the last year to include public intoxication and reckless conduct both at 6%, criminal trespassing at 9%, possession of a controlled substance at 16%, battery just ahead of that at 17%, arrests on warrants and other charges both at 23%. Violent crimes reported totaled 2,122 and included 1,231 cases of aggravated assault, 559 robbery cases, 312 cases of rape, and 20 murders (Sentinel U., 2021).
Gang violence is also problematic with numbers last year at 38 aggravated assaults, 100 simple assaults, 40 robberies, and 20 homicides (Sentinel U., 2021).
Scavenger Hunt
The parks and recreation department offers educational programs such as swimming lessons, nutrition, gardening, sports leagues, fitness, after-school, and kids' summer programs. There is a high homeless population and lots of complaints of loitering after dark. The healthcare system offers elder services including medical care advocacy, senior transportation, service animals, meals on wheels, abuse prevention, community centers, government entitlement
assistance, long-term care, nursing home units, and inpatient/outpatient hospital beds. City Hall social services offered are adoption, head start and early head start, youth independent living, stay-at-home program, child-care subsidy, SNAP, WIC, and healthcare benefits. The Better Health Clinic offers contraceptive services, pregnancy testing/counseling, achieving pregnancy services, basic infertility services, preconception health, STD services, breast/cervical cancer
screens, and other preventatives. The soup kitchen, located at and sponsored by the Interfaith Church provides free meals to anyone in the community year-round. The largest number was the
homeless adult population at 64%. The affordable housing project offers different living spaces including studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments at an affordable rate in a low-income area. The biggest tenant complaints include factory smoke and problems with pests and mold (Sentinel U., 2021).
Windshield Survey
During my bus tour of Sentinel City, it became evident that there are a variety of different
buildings, from old brick-and-mortar construction to updated stick-built, and even new construction, depending on the part of the city, and the financial well-being of that section. The vast majority of buildings are older, and very close together, with little room between them. In some of the oldest, least financially supported areas, the buildings are even connected. The biggest factor that seems blatantly evident is the effect of money on each neighborhood. The more money the residents make, the better the shape that particular neighborhood is in. The poorer neighborhoods have more graffiti, broken windows, and boarded-up doors. Similarly, the
more financially stable neighborhoods had more thriving businesses with updated buildings and better-kept homes.
The area is all city/urban with limited open space, except for the park district, which space is still limited. There is little to no green space, no large trees, no big house yards or “white-picket-fence” type homes. While the park district is public space, a high number of homeless were also observed.
Neighborhood divisions are divided by name, by economic status like factory workers or small businesses or family housing, and in one case, as mentioned earlier, by physical barriers like heavy concrete blockades. The common areas in each neighborhood are also different for each neighborhood. There
always seemed to be at least a few people gathered at every bus stop, and there is usually a business or park or other gathering place near the stop. There seemed to be plenty of people in all areas however, lots of people riding bikes around town, playing in the park, gathered near the bodega and of course around the soup kitchen (during meal times). Overall the primary form of transportation is the bus, also bicycles, and to a lesser degree, personal vehicles as there are limited large parking lot areas, and busses are simple and readily available.
There are a variety of services available within the community including doctors offices, clinics, child day-care to name a few. The parks and school yards seem to be well-used also. There are grocery options in a couple of the neighborhoods and they are readily accessible via the bus. Throughout the course of my day, bus-tour, I saw moms and children out walking, individuals out shopping, riding their bikes, prison clean-up crews, business owners cleaning up outside their establishments, and homeless on their way to a resource like the soup kitchen. I also noted a lot of dogs with their owners, stray cats in all areas, along with rats and more trash in the poorer neighborhoods. The poorer areas had more graffiti, trash, broken windows, and have a higher African American or Hispanic population, while the more wealthy areas had houses in better repair and tended to be more Caucasian. There seem to be English and Spanish language resources available.

Overall, Christianity, or at least the belief in God, seems to be the primary religion. There
are both hetero and homosexual individuals in the community and it does appear that the church that sponsors the soup kitchen also gets a lot of traffic even during non-meal serving hours.
Alcohol and drugs do seem to be an issue here as they can be seen in homeless and at least alcohol can be bought at the bodega. Unfortunately, there do tend to be higher incidences of drug use in areas with higher homeless populations.
