Kines 119: Chapter 11 Flyer Chapter 11: Careers in Health and Fitness, pages 274-304
1.
Which of the five chapter objectives do you find most interesting and why
?
I find the chapter objective “introduce you to a variety of professional opportunities in the sphere of health” to be the most interesting because I feel like I am unaware of many career opportunities that fall into the sphere of health and so I am curious to learn of them. *
Did you achieve the chapter objective?
In the space below, help to create a flyer to promote Careers in Health and Fitness. You can write your answer out in complete sentences, bullet points or choose an image that represents your answer with some words to be clear about the answer. There are not many questions so there should be lots of details in each of the flyer sections. I know the formatting can get tricky, so feel free to make it your own or to write out the information in question/answer style. This document is also saved as a
.pdf if that is easier to edit. The questions for an expert in the field and the Pre-
discussion activity is on the last page of this assignment.

Often referred to as MOGs and can include things such as sports medicine and physical therapy clinics. -
In a community setting, the goal is to use non-
clinical approaches to avoid the need for clinical health care and prevent diseases in a specific group. This is done by offering health
care such as personal training, gym membership, grocery stipends, placing parks and recreation centers in towns, etc. The community itself can vary, it could be a community of employees, an old-aged home, a city or a daycare/elementary school. What is the Exercise is Medicine initiative
(page 282)? You should look this up on the
web for more information (American College of
Sports Medicine). How can this initiative be
built in to Careers in Health and Fitness?

Pre-Lecture Activity
The activity for this Chapter will focus on the many different health-related careers.
Select the 3 health-related careers listed in this Chapter that you are most familiar with (not Physical Therapy or Athletic Training). List the career and the primary responsibilities, identify the target audience/client, two positive aspects, and two negative aspects of that career.
1. Job description, responsibilities, training/education & audience = Health and Fitness Director, hiring, training and providing support for a diverse staff of health
and fitness professionals. Must possess a broad interdisciplinary education that includes, business and kinesiology/health. Audience is more so the professionals
who would work underneath the director.
Positives: Allows for a leadership role, provides opportunity to perform on the business side of health
Negatives: Less hands-on with patients, can be higher stress because you are managing so many details. Also will always need people to manage.
2. Job description, responsibilities, training/education & audience = Wellness coach, provide guidance regarding behaivors, stress, weight management, mindset, and overall health to diverse group of people. Must have certification by a nationally recognized organization, skills in counseling, behavior change, cultural diversity, teaching, and exercise pre-scription, and a bachelor’s degree in
health and fitness related field. Target audience would be anyone looking for general big picture guidance on how to become healthier overall.
Positives: Incredibly hands on, becoming increasingly sought after and demand for these is increasing
Negatives: Requires extensive knowledge of multiple areas which can take more time to obtain, can only see as many customers as you can fit into your working hours so a more difficult job to grow a practice in.
3. Job description, responsibilities, training/education & audience = Group exercise instructor: Lead’s a wide variety of fitness classes for groups and various population groups. Must have certification by a nationally recognized organization and have strong leadership/teaching skills, also helpful if there are extra certifications and/or training is specialized areas. Target audience is people
looking for some fitness and exercise in a group setting, often people looking for some community within their exercising.
Positives: Fun and engaging (very hands-on with people), often involves physical activity while doing the job, social, easy to do and requires very little certifications and no degree. 3
Negatives: More of a salary cap/ceiling because it is not a professional career/job, not always the most stable career as gyms can close down and group fitness classes go in and out of style. 4
