Questions to Answer 1. What generalizations can you make about the “bureaucracy of a burger place,” i.e. how involved are federal agencies and departments in the burgers that you eat? Federal agencies are very involved in the processes and actual foods that we consume because they regulate every aspect of the burger place and its food. They set regulations for the smallest component of our meals because they want to protect the population from food borne diseases. 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages to consumers of burger (like you) of federal rules and regulations? Advantages and disadvantages for burger businesses? Bullet point your answers. Consumers Advantages Disadvantages - protects customers from dangerous foods - others (the bureaucracies) are aware of what is being put into our foods - ensures that companies are required to share what they are putting in food/doing with food with their consumers - we may not get exactly what we want to eat if it’s considered “unhealthy” by the government’s opinion - everything is being inspected by the government Burger Restaurant Businesses Advantages Disadvantages - reduce risk of illnesses due to food - if you pass the first inspection, it becomes cost-saving to not have to go through a second - common regulations facilitate interactions between industry regulators - businesses risk being shut down if they do not pass inspections - it can take a while to be approved by federal regulatory agencies 3. Based on what you learned from this activity about the bureaucracy of a burger, would you go into the burger restaurant business? Why or why not? I would not like to go into the burger restaurant business because it seems like it would be a lot of work to deal with all of the federal agencies along the way and to follow each regulation. For example, if I were to have a restaurant that does not pass one of the inspections, I risk losing my business license and it would definitely be difficult to get that back.
