Identify an article of your own choice which should be AN ORIGINAL QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ARTICLE from an open access Public Health journal such as PLOS One, BMC Public Health, International Journal of Public Health, International Journal of Epidemiology, etc and published not earlier than 2015. Structure of the essay (critical appraisal) : Write an essay and the essay will be structured in the following format: Introduction : The introduction will include the following information (500 words): The purpose of the essay. Using a style appropriate to a non-academic audience (for example, newspaper readers), summarise this study, outlining its significance for public health. Mention the critical framework used (such as CASP, JBI, etc) and why. Critical Appraisal : Using the following subheading critique the article (2000 words): 1.Title: whether the title of the research is appropriate. 2. Abstract: the abstract provides a clear overview of the research. 3. Introduction: What is the author's central purpose? 4. Methods: o What methods were used to accomplish this purpose (systematic recording of observations, analysis and evaluation of published research, assessment of theory)? o What were the techniques used? And how was each technique performed? o What kind of data can be obtained using each technique? o How are such data interpreted? o What kind of information is produced by using the technique? 5. Results: o What objective evidence was obtained from the author's efforts (observations, measurements, etc.)? o What were the results of the study? o How was each technique used to obtain each result? o What statistical tests were used to evaluate the significance of the conclusions based on numeric or graphic data? o How did each result contribute to answering the question or testing the hypothesis raised in the introduction? 6.Discussion: o How were the results interpreted?
o How were they related to the original problem (author's view of evidence rather than objective findings)? o Were the author(s) able to answer the question (test the hypothesis) raised? o Did the research provide new factual information, a new understanding of a phenomenon in the field, a new research technique? o How was the significance of the work described? o Did the reported observations/interpretations support or refute observations or interpretations made by other researchers? ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Criteria Where to find them University of Sunderland Level 7 Generic Assessment Criteria See pages 1-3 in this link REFERENCING REQUIREMENTS Required referencing and citation format Guidance on format Harvard See this guidance FURTHER INFORMATION Extension Requests Requests for extensions should be directed to the module leader in the first instance. If your module leader is unavailable, you can contact your programme leader in their absence to request an extension. For further information on the regulations governing extensions of assessment deadlines, see here . Note that if you submit your work late without an agreed extension, this will be recorded as a non-submission.
Extenuating Circumstances In situations where a short extension may not suffice, the University of Sunderland has a procedure to deal with events which affect your work, but which are not predictable and are beyond your control, for example, illness, enabling you to defer a piece of work (and submit it at a later assessment point). Important Note You should note that the policy (like that of many universities) takes the view that by sitting an examination or handing in an assessment, students have deemed themselves fit, and no subsequent claim for extenuating circumstances will be considered. The Faculty will publish deadline for the submission of such claims prior to the assessment and it is important that you are aware that such claims must be made by the deadline, as after it has passed, a claim will not be considered unless there are exceptional circumstances. For further information on the regulations governing consideration of extenuating circumstances, guidance on extenuating circumstances and details of how to apply, see here . Academic Misconduct All work submitted is expected to be your own work. Common forms of academic misconduct include plagiarism and collusion but are not limited to these. The penalties for academic misconduct can be very serious. If you are unsure what academic misconduct is, you should contact the module leader or your personal tutor to discuss it. Please familiarise yourself with the University’s Guide to Academic Integrity and Misconduct and the University’s Academic Misconduct Regulations, available here .
