2 Part I: Assessment Answer: Value/ Belief Pattern The top five most prominent ethnic groups in Philadelphia are grouped into Hispanic and non-Hispanic. The Non- Hispanic are grouped into African American, White, and Asian. On the other hand, Hispanic are grouped into Other and White. Their percentages in the country are 40.1%, 34.1%, 7.36%,6.86%, and 5.2%, respectively. The community has various religions dominating religion is Christianity, with a percentage of 68%, where protestants have 41%, and Catholics have 26%. Irreligion follows next with 24%, followed closely by Judaism with 3%, and then other religions with 5%. The community has spiritual resources, like churches, chapels, Bibles, synagogues, support groups, and others (Gullon et al., 2020). The community values health promotion measures where the citizens are educated on the importance of eating healthy foods, the dangers of smoking, its effect on the user and passive smokers, and ways of avoiding crime and injuries. The community values compassion, equity, leadership, accountability, and inclusion. Nutrition Indicators of nutrient deficiency include underweight, bleeding gums, slow-to-heal wounds, brittle nails, grey hair, sore mouth, and acne. The city has a high obesity rate of 67%, as per the CDC. Food in Philadelphia is affordable compared to other cities in the US. The cost of a meal varies in the city but, on average, is $39 per day. However, when a person is dining out, the meal can cost, on average, $16 per head (Gullon et al., 2020). Water is available in the community since it has enormous rivers and other water bodies. The rivers include Delaware,
3 Schuylkill, Lehigh, and others. Fast food is available in different restaurants in the city. In most places, community stores sell unhealthy foods. Environmental Health Concerns The air quality in the community is polluted mainly by ozone, a gas that is by precursor contaminants that are held in the air after they react with sunlight. In addition, pollution due to soot happens (Gullon et al., 2020). Hence air in the community is unhealthy. Control of temperatures in the community could be better also. Exercise The community offers numerous fitness programs, like sports and fitness classes. They include group fitness classes, rumble boxing for 60 min, soul fusion, unite pump, and the bare essentials. There are numerous recreational facilities, such as Germantown life enrichment center, Hagert playground, and Drexel recreational center. In the community, a safety training program is compulsory for all team members and the supervisor (Kim et al., 2021). The common injuries in the community include being struck by objects, auto accidents, occupants, and injuries related to guns. Some leisure activities include watching movies, ice skating, taking a helicopter rider, and cherry street pier. Cognitive The primary language the in the community is Philadelphian English. The language is not a barrier even though other languages are used, like Arabic, French, Chinese Mandarin, Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, and Portuguese. 28 percent of Philadelphians with at least 25 years of have at least a bachelor’s degree. About 16 percent of Philadelphians do not have a degree but have completed college credits (Kim et al., 2021). Among the degrees awarded by the city’s universities and colleges, 16 percent are in STEM fields. STEM fields are science, technology,

4 engineering, and maths. The community provides English courses for non-natives and GED preparations. Various educational mandates are used, like continuing education and year in- services. Special education programs are also offered for the disabled. Rest The sleep patterns for community members are that most do not get enough sleep. On average, they sleep for 6.86 hours instead of the recommended hours by NIH, which should be at least seven hours. Some factors affecting sleep include tobacco use, extracurricular activities, noise, and health issues. Self- Perception Individuals give back to society through community-based programs. They include Monkey and Elephant, action wellness and the ladybug project. In addition, through community- based programs, non-violent offenders aged at least 18 years interact with community organizations, firms, and residents in cleaning neighborhoods (Nieves et al., 2022). They include street cleaning, assisting community organizations, and cleaning city facilities and underpasses. Relationship The interaction of community members is friendly. Some groups are more vulnerable than others. For instance, ethnic and racial minority members are more likely to get infections than Caucasians. In addition, the ones living in congregate areas have the same disease susceptibility. However, those with chronic health issues and the elderly have a greater risk of being infected when compared to others (Nieves et al., 2022). The reason is that they have low immunity to infections. As a result, the health system is stretched. Student and church councils hold power well, and it positively affects the community, administration, and PTA. However, the gang uses
5 force and impacts the community negatively. Responses from police take too long due to factors like a shortage of officers and dispatchers. Reproduction Programs on contraceptive education are offered in the community. There are free workshops for Latinx and Black girls living and attending schools in the city. The programs are taken to schools and communities (Swain et al., 2020). Birth control methods like pills, education, condom, and others are provided in hospitals like Castor Ave. Health Center. There are challenges to accessing maternal health care services due to factors like lack of health insurance, transport, and child care. Coping In the community, stress is high due to crime, poverty, drug abuse, and violence. The main issues in the city are crime, public safety, and drugs. Gun shootings are co-community-based, tobacco is consumed highly, and crime is also high due to poverty (Cawley et al., 2020). The city is partnering with learning institutions, community-based organizations, and government agencies to deal with the issues.
